AP Exclusive: Google tracks your movements, like it or not

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google wants to know where you go so badly that it records your movements even when you explicitly tell it not to.

An Associated Press investigation found that many Google services on Android devices and iPhones store your location data even if you’ve used privacy settings that say they will prevent it from doing so.

Computer-science researchers at Princeton confirmed these findings at the AP’s request.

Remember that truism about a computer bug being a feature? There is an old Latin phrase that we should be thinking about here; "Cui bono", whom does this 'feature' benefit? Google states that they are clear about how they track their users but much less so on how they are using that data for their sales and research.

While this specifies Alphabet/Google, take it for certain that many other tech companies will be found to do similar things. I may be naive, but of them all, it appears that Apple is the one with the best reputation for preserving privacy. That being said, we all must educate ourselves on this and other privacy issues.

You can choose to use Google apps, like Google Map, and that will allow for their tracking. If you eschew Google apps and never install them, that tracking may not be likely. I'm no longer an expert in this area (if I ever was).

The nearly everyone who goes to jail or loses their job is either a conservative or someone with an association to a conservative.

For years I’ve been able to go into my account in google and see everywhere I (my phone) have been going back years. I actually like this info. If nothing else, it would prove my innocence if falsely accused of being somewhere I wasn’t - Or my guilt if I was somewhere I shouldn’t have been.

I’ve said for over a decade that if you plan on doing something bad like abduct a child or rob a bank, don’t bring your phone.

Who would trust Google? Chrome is spyware.

Technically, it only proves your phone wasn't there. You could have given your phone to someone else to carry around while you were elsewhere.

Wrong. Unless you root your phone, the apps are impossible to uninstall-—Heck, even with rooting, it’s hard to do so unless you use a different ROM.

Put your cell phone in a 'Faraday cage,' available online and tell Google and other nasty trackers to go piss up a rope.

I'm puzzled, as my comment clearly stated 'never install' so why am I wrong?

... If you eschew Google apps and never install them ...

Of course then you can’t use it. Cheaper to not have one.

You can’t easily remove the second battery. Probably voids the computer completely.

Heh, and we thought no one or no organization could out sleeze Dorkbama the Muslim eunuch quota boy or the bottom-dwelling Clintons.

Google is the absolute bottom limit of lying, sleeze and smell.

May as well take care of San FranSh*tco . We’ll get Google, and the country’s first third country city. Maybe even Pelosi too.

Triple good!

“Or a foil chip bag like Gene Hackman used in Enemy of the State.”

It's bad enough to have your phone's “movements” tracked. Unfortunately putting it in an anti-stat bag also keeps it from receiving calls and almost everything else it's supposed to do for you.
OTOH your FasTrak/FastPass transponder is doing the same thing and all you need it to be exposed for is when you pass through a toll facility. So we keep ours in a “bag” and just throw it up on the dash when we cross a bridge here in the SF Bay Area. It is bad enough for Google to be tracking you, but for us, it is unacceptable for the State of California to be doing it too. Now, with transponders and the phalanx of cameras we are under 24/7 “surveillance” supposedly for our own good. The only thing they can't do yet is smell us, but I am sure that they're working on that as we speak. When that happens, they will instantly know where every illegal alien Mexican is. They will just have to follow the frijoles!
