"Elements of the U.S. military are clearly aware that much of what the U.S. is doing in Yemen is aiding AQAP and there is much angst about that," said Michael Horton, a fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, a U.S. analysis group that tracks terrorism.
"However, supporting the UAE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia against what the U.S. views as Iranian expansionism takes priority over battling AQAP and even stabilizing Yemen," Horton said.

We are fighting both Al Quaeda in Yemen and the Iran proxies. Problem is we fund Saudi Arabia, but they don’t just act in coalition with the U.S. — but do a lot on their own unabated...That’s what makes this whole awful situation so tricky.

Bottom line, we’re fighting to make the world safe for Sunni Islam. Can you imagine losing your kid to protect Yemen from being Iranian friendly rather than Saudi friendly? And to actually force them to fight alongside the people who attacked us on 9/11, Al Qeida?
But as long as they feel “angst” about being an adjunct of al-Qaeda, I guess it’s okay.
