Canada to ask allies to help cool Saudi dispute; U.S. offers no aid

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada plans to seek help from the United Arab Emirates and Britain to defuse an escalating dispute with Saudi Arabia, sources said on Tuesday, but close ally the United States made clear it would not get involved.

The Saudi government on Sunday recalled its ambassador to Ottawa, barred Canada’s envoy from returning and placed a ban on new trade, denouncing Canada for urging the release of jailed rights activists. Riyadh accused Ottawa on Tuesday of interfering in its internal affairs.

One well placed source said the Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - which stresses the importance of human rights - planned to reach out to the United Arab Emirates.

“The key is to work with allies and friends in the region to cool things down, which can happen quickly,” said the source, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Another source said Canada would also seek help from Britain. The British government on Tuesday urged the two nations to show restraint.

The United States, traditionally one of Canada’s most important friends, stayed on the sidelines. U.S. President Donald Trump - who criticized Trudeau after a Group of Seven summit in June - has forged tighter ties with Riyadh.

“Both sides need to diplomatically resolve this together. We can’t do it for them; they need to resolve it together,” U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told a briefing.

The dispute looks set to damage what is a modest bilateral trade relationship worth nearly $4 billion a year. Canadian exports to Saudi Arabia totaled about $1.12 billion in 2017.

Canada says it does not know what will happen to a $13 billion defense contract to sell Canadian-made General Dynamics Corp armored vehicles to Saudi Arabia.

Little Justin thought he could do whatever the Muslim Brotherhood told him and there would be no payback.

Now the loud mouthed little punk doesn’t know what to do.

He played to the American media and tried to attack President Trump. Now he is very sorry.

There is no one to help the confused little punk.

Hahahaha I’m loving this. So, the pathetic little man/child Trudeau got all full of himself and thought he’d sniff and snort and pretend to stand up to President Trump because he thought it would play well in Canada. Lolololo - he got called on it and now is a quivering little hair-gelled mess. He needs America to help him out of his mess with Saudi Arabia, and he’s sitting on the sidelines waiting for the president to negotiate NAFTA with him. And if the president decides to NOT be in touch with Justy, well, what’s his next move? Pleading? I love it.

A wonderful response from state.

Good. I’m a Canadian, live just outside Calgary. Trudeau wants to bring sharia to Canada, but wants to whine about human rights in SA? What’s up with that? Suck it Justine...

Thank you for making that distinction.

Almost no one ELSE on here does. X.x

All that said, even as a Canadian, I wish Donald Trump (or any other world leader with a bit of gravitas), would flat-out say the REAL truth: “Apparently Little Justin was never taught that children should keep their mouths shut when adults are speaking.”

I was in Halifax, Nova Scotia when the whole Reagan-Iran Contra mess was going down. The Canadian media was snarky then too.

Until it was uncovered the arms shipments were through Canada. Then they got real quiet . . .

I got into it with a bunch of them on twitter about a month ago.

And I have lived in two border states for the last 30 years. The BC Canadians are not that high and mighty but the ones that come here from Windsor can barely get their nose out of the air.
