Public school FAIL: 40% of Americans can't name even ONE right contained in the 1st Amendment

Civics 101: Americans who are at least 40 years old remember their basic American civics and government classes which taught how our government functions, how Congress works, what a republic is versus a pure democracy, and, of course, the Constitution.

Instruction was particularly focused on the Bill of Rights — the first 10 amendments to the Constitution as basic building blocks of a free and thriving society written by our founders and ratified by the first 13 states.

Learning how government functions and learning about our core constitutional rights is fundamental to the preservation of our country.

This has been a long time coming, and it started back in the days of Lyndon B. Johnson and him trying to get a Head Start. The more the Federal Gov;t gets involved the more broken things become. Time to turn it over to parents to fix this.

FAIL? Is it failing in its aim because 60% can still name at least one of the rights?

I remember back in 1963 when I was in the 8th grade, we studied the Constitution, had to memorize President Kennedy’s entire cabinet, complete a large note book on the Constitution, and pass a difficult oral and written test in order to graduate and continue on to high school.

The teaching of history was absolutely awful when I went to school (90’s for middle and high school). They barely taught us anything.

One wonders if a greater percentage might be more familiar with the 5th Amendment.

No...it’s not a fail. It’s intentional.

I grew up in California and so did my kids (who are now ages 33 to 40). For both my kids and I, civics was taught in both 8th and 11th grades. Students had to pass a state civics test in 8th grade to graduate to high school. There was also a state test given in 11th grade. I have no idea whether those requirements still exist. If the tests are still in place, I wouldn’t be surprised if they have lowered the scores required to pass.

“we studied the Constitution, had to memorize President Kennedy’s entire cabinet, complete a large note book on the Constitution, and pass a difficult oral and written test in order to graduate and continue on to high school”

We did too, in Richland, MO and Ft. Leonard Wood in the early 70’s. We also studied various forms of government and learned why communism was from the pit of hell. And we read Orwell, Ayn Rand and Huxley. We studied World Wars I and II and the Holocaust. We studied the Vietnam War. We learned all kinds of things no one is learning about today. It is intentional, subversive and treasonous, what the left is doing in the schools and to our children’s minds.

The time we spent learning all of that is now devoted to teaching how to wear condoms, gay programming films for 5th graders, Social Justice teachings, and classes on learning how to apply for Welfare, SNAP, and Section 8.

Probably happy with that 60% since "it" - that is the progressive educators and the college professors who continue to indoctrinate their successors - would not want to draw attention to their agenda.

Far better they appear to be trying very hard to educate while at the same time they work to produce idiots for the elections.

It is parallel with the effort to revoke the 2dA and paint firearms as "icky, scary things that have no place in our society" - a society they would like to see disarm itself and eventually be unable to raise an effective military ground force.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

A few months back there were some very good history books recommended and discussed here on FR.

Does anyone recall what they were?

The President has to rework the educational system. Make certain topics mandatory.

This survey says volumes about why homeschooling is so important today. And will become even more vital in the future.
