New city tech workers dreaming of dining in workplace cafeterias may soon face a harsh reality — going outside.
Two city legislators on Tuesday are expected to announce legislation banning on-site workplace cafeterias in an effort to promote and support local restaurants.
The measure, proposed by Supervisor Ahsha Safai and co-sponsored by Supervisor Aaron Peskin, would adjust zoning laws to ban workplace cafeterias moving forward, but would not be retroactive.
Peskin said the measure, was inspired by tech companies like Twitter and Airbnb, which are widely known to have access to dining in their own buildings, depriving nearby restaurants of the dollars usually spent by nearby workers. The measure has the support of Gwyneth Borden, executive director of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association and other local merchants.
Under the legislation which is expected to be introduced Tuesday, “you can’t have an industrial kitchen in your office building,” Peskin said.
Peskin said the legislation sought to avoid the “Amazon effect that impacts retail and restaurants across the county,” he said. “This is forward thinking legislation.”

Force your workers to leave the safety of the building, go out into the streets where feces & urine are a constant threat, and force them to eat in restaurants that are heavily staffed by illegal invaders,who have had no health screenings !!!

Wow, I think that’s it. They always try to fix disastrous results of government overreach with more government overreach. It’s straight-up Central Planning, as others have written here.
However, those restaurants who build up a ‘DELIVERY’ service might like this. You are still eating in your office, but there is no Industrial Kitchen.

That will add to their fake “Global Warming” & add to the smog that SF sends to the Calif foothills via the constant wind. I lived in Nevada County-—very little population. However, we got hammered over & over again for our ‘smog-—which was air mailed each day from S F.
So-—Let the employees pay for their own food on the roach coaches.
We used to have a proper cafeteria where I work, and they made the absolute BEST burgers, even though it was in a hospital setting. In the interest of “cost savings” it was shut down, the entire building repurposed (the freezers are now a temporary morgue!)and the staff reassigned or let go.
The patient meals are now prepared 1500 miles away, then portioned and “re-thermalized” on site just before distribution.
There in no option for staff to purchase any “meal” from this new system, the food is utterly disgusting in appearance, texture, and taste even IF one could get one, and a “food court” consisting of a doughnut shop, a coffee shop and a Subway is your only option on-site.
Most staff either brown-bag it, or head to the grocery store 3 blocks away to get their meals. It’s ridiculous, as the food services department was actually generating a net profit every year, which was used to procure new medical equipment.
Instead, now Accione’ makes horrible food that borders on inedible, and sends the profits overseas.
Cronyism indeed.
My wife worked for Hayes Microcomputer Products, the modem people, in their glory days in the late 1980s. They had a serious restaurant chef running their foodservice operation. Soup of the day might be lobster bisque. Desserts like strawberry cheesecake and chocolate mousse. It was awesome and heavily subsidized. When the IRS auditor came, they didn’t let him go to the cafeteria!
Well, if you can mandate you purchase insurance, why not mandate you have to buy lunch. Hell, tie the systems together, so that what you buy for lunch immediately impacts your insurance premium, and whatever the status of your health mandates what you can purchase for meals, too. Depending on if they want you to live (liberal) or die (conservative).
If done, this willbackfire bigly.
If workplace cafeterias are banned, the same people will just set up food trucks in the work parking lot and nothing will change.
The idiocy of the left knows no bounds. They lack logic and vision to see how the laws of unintended consequences always stymies liberals intentions and serves the free market.

The company my son works for has a 3 meal a day cafeteria/grill with excellent food, tap room, bowling alley, video game room and ping pong.
He works in a satellite office and that’s the only way he can get any work done.

So bring your own lunch. Most places I work have closed campuses and you are not supposed to leave for lunch.

LOL! When I was in the Army, working in IT, we got a new Colonel as our Boss. We convinced him that we needed cold battery storage so he let us requisition a small fridge for the office.
It held batteries, of course - but also bagels, juice, soda, cream cheese, Snickers bars, etc. ;)
