‘****ING COMMIE’! Andrew Cuomo’s response to NY Daily News layoffs is MESSED UP

In case you missed it, the New York Daily News’ editorial staff is being reduced about 50 percent as part of parent company Tronc’s move to “fundamentally [restructure]” the tabloid paper, “re-focusing much of our talent on breaking news — especially in areas of crime, civil justice and public responsibility”:

The grim news officially arrives at the New York Daily News, where staffers were just informed that Tronc is reducing the "size of the editorial team by approximately 50 percent and re-focusing much of our talent on breaking news."

Here's my story on the massive layoffs at the New York Daily News, a truly dire development for the proud tabloid and a dark day for journalism https://t.co/JNdywJpqNL

— Tom Kludt (@TomKludt) July 23, 2018

It’s such a dark day that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has issued an official statement:

Wait … what?

"These layoffs were made without notifying the state"#HeadDesk https://t.co/rQGVTcxCaY

— (((AG))) (@AG_Conservative) July 23, 2018

And tell me why they had to "notify" you?

— kramed67037 (@Kramed67037) July 23, 2018

Since when is an independent news organization required to “notify the State”? 🙄

— Paul Z (@pzdc20008) July 23, 2018

Why does the state need to be notified? https://t.co/dbi1FFXJ2R

What the bloody hell is wrong with you?!

— Matthew DesOrmeaux ⚜ (@authoridad) July 23, 2018

You do know that a private organization has no reason to notify the state before making staff decisions right?

— Bill (@billis820) July 23, 2018

One rule I do support is the separation of press and state. I don't think government should provide a single penny to any media organization.

I just don't think the conflict of interest serves people well at all. https://t.co/TZ8nvueWJ3

— Persnickety (@Dawnsfire) July 23, 2018

Just a little confused why private enterprise would notify “the state” before making an internal cost reducing decision. Hard as it may be is there a process/ring kissing in the state of New York to hiring and firing that is unique?

— Dr Nancy Drew (@DrNancyDrew) July 23, 2018

Does every politician from NY think that it's standard and acceptable for government to dictate and interfere with the business activities of private companies?

I believe other states have this private state notice required, but as long as the layoffs happen enough later after the announcement, it meets the “heads up” required.

I think this New York state law is a good idea, but it is the law:

https://labor.ny.gov/workforcenypartners/warn/warnportal.shtm
“The New York State Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires businesses to give early warning of closing and layoffs.”

Obviously the Daily News layoffs - the left-wing loonie rag beloved by black subway riders - will be putting a crimp in Cuomo’s good coverage.

Much of the media IS an organ of the state. He may have a point.

I think they should go back to Who, What, When, Where, and How and then remove any outrage and hysteria. Stop writing news as if it belongs on the opinion page and remember, “Just the facts”.

I think some states have laws on announcing layoffs by large companies.

If they keep the staffers on payroll for the required waiting period, does that meet legal requirements. (This is the kind of law that discourages businesses from setting up in New York and other “rust belt” states.)

The New York State Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (New York WARN) requires employers with 50 or more full-time employees to provide at least 90 days’ advance written notice of mass layoffs, relocations, and employment losses. ... New York WARN applies to more employers than the federal law.

Which Employers Are Covered?
The coverage rules under federal and state law differ.

Employers Covered by WARN
The WARN Act requires certain larger employers to give advance notice of mass layoffs or plant closings that will result in a certain number or percentage of employees losing their jobs. Employers are covered only if they have at least 100 full-time employees or at least 100 employees who work a combined 4,000 hours or more per week. (Full-time employees are defined as those who work at least 20 hours a week and have been employed for at least six of the 12 months ending on the date when notice must be given under WARN.)

Employers Covered by New York Law
Under New York law, employers are covered if they have at least 50 employees.
