Flying home Monday after the summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump and his senior aides recognized that he had made a mistake that risked lasting damage and needed to be fixed quickly, people familiar with the matter said.
Playing on a loop on television was footage of the president standing next to Mr. Putin, casting doubt on the U.S. intelligence communitys finding that Russia interfered in the 2016 election and aligning himself with Moscows denial of any meddling.
Mr. Trump, aboard Air Force One, spoke to his staff about how best to correct what they knew was a miscue, and the discussions continued with staff meetings Tuesday morning in Washington. Aides considered various responses and passed them back and forth, culminating in Mr. Trumps afternoon announcement in the Cabinet Room that he had misspoken, a person familiar with the matter said.
What he meant to say, he told reporters, was: I dont see any reason why it wouldnt be Russia that had intruded in the U.S. election and not what he actually said: I dont see any reason why it would be Russia.
The rare admission of error on Mr. Trumps part came after bipartisan criticism of his remarks, which some of his closest allies have said could weaken his presidency and other Republicans feared would drive away voters in the November midterms.
It isnt clear whether Mr. Trumps statement will quell the backlash. The White House found itself under scrutiny again Wednesday when Mr. Trump, at a cabinet meeting, appeared to say that he didnt believe Russia was trying to influence this years midterms.

You don’t do damage control when you hold your ground.
A lot of speculation here or Trump still has bad leak problem.
In this instance I think it’s the former.
One thinks that truly useful advisors would have predicted in advance exactly this Leftist-MSM narrative. It was pretty obvious it was coming, wasn’t it?
“people familiar with the matter said.”
Out of all the hit pieces by the MSM each day, they never name a source.
Not a name, position, title nothing.
people familiar with the matter said.
The WSJ called me and asked if I was familiar with the matter. (sarc)
In the USA we need to get to the point where people demand the news media must state the name of who gave them the information. Otherwise, what the media says is a fabricated story.
Ive wondered if this was purposeful, to take attention off the Supreme Court nominee.
Trump has followed this tactic many times over the past two years.
None of this has anything to do with Russia. This is an attemp to weaken him so they can get rid of tarrifs
We are Peter Nicholas and Michael C. Bender of the Mocking Bird Media.
You ask why don't we report on Hillary receiving the dirty money from Browder?
HA HA HA!! HA! HA HA! Do you have to ask? DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO ASK??? HA! HA! HA HA!
More usual and customary fake news BS from the pink panty press.
The Halfrican KNEW he was going to be reelected but hit up Demos for campaign money.
Big whoopty do. I’ve left off “n’t” in countless posts on FR. It happens. You correct and move on. No big deal.
If that was damage control then they did a poor job of it.
This is fake news
Does the WSJ ever publish any non-Fake News about President Trump?
Why would President Trump need any damage control? 79% of Republicans approve of the way President Trump handled that meeting and presser with Putin. The WSJ agrees with 91% of democrats and the MSM. That says a lot about the low reliability and quality of information published by the WSJ.
