Analysis: Harsh words may mean North Korea seeks deal with Trump

North Korea's vitriolic criticism of the U.S. following a first round of nuclear negotiations went out of its way to spare one person: President Donald Trump.

In a statement issued just hours after the two-day talks finished on Saturday, North Korea accused the U.S. side of a "unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization," then added, "We still cherish our good faith in President Trump."

On one level, the sheen of last month's Singapore summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with broad smiles and handshakes, has yet to wear off. But on another, North Korea may be betting that Trump, the real estate developer-turned-president, will be more willing than his negotiators to ease off his administration's hard-line positions to make a deal....

I was thinking the same thing. A negotiation starts with your most unreasonable offer.

Denuclearization isn’t negotiable.

The “summit” was a great accomplishment. The translation of the North Korean statement is not inconsistent with their negotiation strategy. It is all posturing.

No, but sanctions, economic development, etc are

The time line is always negotiable.

NK probably wants sanctions to be lifted in steps as they denuclearize. I understand their position.

They might be looking for a when we do ABC, you do XYZ.

Just my opinion and how I see it

I couldn’t figure out why people were getting so excited about what is clearly public posturing by North Korea.

Because it can be used as a cudgel against Trump. If it had been Obama it would’ve been shrugged off.

I actually got asked to leave a korean shoe store in tongduchon. I offered below what he thought his knockoff nikes were worth and he just started yelling at me. My wife was visiting. We still laugh about it.

We already agreed to not have a joint military exercise with South Korea next month.

Funniest Story I have heard this month. I told my wife just a few minutes ago and we both laughed ourselves silly. Thanks.

“...clearly public posturing by North Korea.”

I don’t disagree. While I hate to stereotype, the idea of “saving face” is big with certain cultures and the North Koreans are probably no exception to that rule.

What’s really going on behind the scenes is what matters. If they’re talking like this behind the scenes, well that’s a different story.

“A negotiation starts with your most unreasonable offer.”

I once offered to sell something at a very reasonable price, actually lower than I knew I could get but I wanted to move it that day. The prospect asked me if that was the best I could do and I put on a most devilish grin and replied, “Oh, no, I can always go higher.” He laughed and agreed to my price.
