Did you mean to include a sarc tag? How anyone could think it bizarre that attention be focused on such a story, is...well, bizarre in itself.
That is my significant other's understanding as well based on her reading the Thai language news. The sudden heavy rains made their entryway difficult/impassable at some point and they reversed course through the narrow parts quickly, hoping to reach higher ground. It just didn't work out as they had planned and they were trapped with the low points completely filled with water.
Stories of deeply compelling human interest happen all around the world, all the time... including people getting stuck in caves.
What doesn’t happen all the time is deep and broad corporate media coverage of such a story. They could run these kinds of stories all the time if they wanted to... but they don’t. Now they are, and why now is what I’m pondering here.
The story of the Chilean miners trapped underground for 69 days got the same level of coverage.
A country that is mostly coastline and they don't teach kids how to swim? It's not that hard!

FIFTH boy is rescued from Thai cave: Rescuers carry child to ambulance amid hopes they can save as many as six children today as anxious parents wait to see if their son will be next
Best map yet, thanks.
And now a 6th boy is rescued according to Fox News.
****Bizarre how much attention this story has gotten when there are so many more important things going on.*****
You must be concerned about Meghan Markle’s wardrobe and English accent?
Harvey Weinstein and #metoo?
UK Brexit ministers quit?
Guiliani, Flynn, Trump and Cuomey crisis?
The biggest sports moments of 2018?
Worth repeating - Dumba## coach.
7 boys now out!
Is Musk already there or is his bouncy house idea being laughed at by the divers that are already rescuing the soccer team?
Thanks for the post. maps.
Not if you understand human nature.
Human beings are driven by emotion. Governing your thoughts and actions by reason takes practice, discipline and for most people training.
Basic instinct for people is to protect children even children that are not yours. A story about children in mortal danger is going to trigger an emotional response and immediate interest.
bttt
Well said - I agree.
Number 6 and 7 now reported rescues and out per FOX
Too much pondering, too little thought. Twelve children battling for their lives deep underground amidst a a huge international effort to rescue them is a major human interest story similar to the Chilean miners. The story has all the elements of a Hollywood thriller as the rescuers fight against the elements and time. One of the rescuers has lost his life in this dangerous enterprise.
These kinds of stories are rare. It has played out over two weeks. The combined efforts of many from around the globe to risk their lives to save another are inspiring and galvanizing. Seven now rescued with 6 to go.
Running tubes in to and out of the cave would present a mortal danger to the divers.
One of the passages that the divers have to swim through is only 2 feet wide. Running tubes through there would present a snag hazard to the divers.
A divers air bottle or other equipment could snag the tube and the diver become entangled in the tubing. If the diver became panicked (the most dangerous thing that can happen to a diver) he could easily die.
I’m sure this isn’t to scale, or there would be 100’s of feet of water in the central “dip” in the tunnel. Would that have similar pressure to diving in open water? Who wanders 2.5 kilometers into a cave?
