Thus Jamaica became both a haven for Jooos! and pirates, and there once really was an International Jooo! Conspiracy. And that’s how, by kicking the Jooos! out of Spain, the Spanish monarchy ultimately declined, but the Western Hemisphere flourished due to those self-same Jooos!

Maimonides and the poet Judah Halevi were among the luminaries who for a time thrived under Moorish rule, both as court physicians and advisors, though in the end Maimonides had to run for his life, and Judah Halevi was drawn inexorably to the Holy Land, where he was murdered (by an Arab just for the hell of it) while kissing the ground at Jaffe Gate in Jerusalem. The Christians who resented them were the peasantry, who remained faithful to Christianity while their “betters” most likely accepted Mad Mo. So....it kind of worked out for Spain becoming the wealthiest nation for hundreds of years. Divine inspiration, some might say.
To use a phrase from Ayn Rand, in the New World, they made money. In Spain, they got money, but lost the money makers, who either burned or shrugged.
When I was staying in Atlanta a few years back, I was a guest at the home of a Mr. Nunez, who was descended from Dr. Samuel Nunez. Dr. Samuel and his fellow Novocristos were on a boat to the New World, only throughout the Spanish Empire in the New World, Novocristos were emphatically unwelcome (except in Jamaica). So they attempted to disembark in Savannah, GA, and were told absolutely not. But the mayor of Savannah learnt by accident that Samuel Nunez was a doctor. He permitted Dr. Samuel to disembark, because Savannah was suffering from an epidemic. Dr. Samuel refused, saying “if my friends are not welcome here, I will stay on board, too. Have a nice plague.” The mayor relented and let all the Maranos off the boat. Dr. Samuel Nunez treated the plague sufferers, instituted precautions to stop the further spread of disease, and the oldest still-operating synagogue on the North American continent was founded. Spain’s loss was the New World’s gain.
Retribution against collaborators with foreign occupiers is the norm throughout history. And so too is how some collaborators switch sides and turn on their former fellow collaborators to prove their new allegiance.
As for the Christian rulers of the newly Christianized Spain offering all non-Christains the choice of conversion or expulsion: Christians, who had never practiced forced conversion before the Islamic conquests, could not have been occupied and ruled for centuries according to Islamic laws without some contamination. [This is similarly revealed in the fact that the 1st black slaves brought to the newly discovered Americas on one of Columbus's followup voyages were ones confiscated from Muslims being expelled from Spain.]
And without straying even further into the weeds of history, I'll repeat my original post: “There's one big difference from 500-years ago: Then it was because Jews were allies of the Islamic invasion and occupation. Today, its because Israel is an enemy of Islamic invasions and occupations.”
I don’t think you or I need to act as defense attorneys for Jews or Christians long dead. The bottom line is, Machiavelli holds more sway over world events past, present or future than sincere devotion to any sort of religion does, and much more than is comforting to those of us who are devotees of a particular religion. But history is what was, not what we would have liked to have been. Jews in that age who were involved in politics were opportunists, as were Christians and Muslims. Not because they were immoral or cynical, but because they were trying to survive in a world out of their control.
I would contest the assertion that Jews were allied with Islamic invaders, first because the Almohads were not interested in allies. Their motto was “Allah or the sword”. Second because workaday Jews were apolitical and had to pay lip service to whatever the conqueror du jour wanted to hear. Third, because that’s a common accusation, finally seized upon by Hitler, who said he did not believe Cohn the industrialist anymore than he did his cousin Kahn the labor organizer. He believed they were both in cahoots and should be cast out. The real truth is that there is no monolithic Jewish conspiracy to do anything, and there were Jews collaborating with the Muslims when the opportunity was ripe, and Jews fleeing in abject terror from them when they were able to and life under them was impossible. There was no monolithic conspiracy of any kind, but the resentment of the peasantry towards better-educated, prosperous merchants, courtiers and craftsmen would concoct such a conspiracy theory regardless. The fact that the odd friar or bishop occasionally egged them on all but assured it.
It would be interesting to learn if only the Spanish Left is behind this or if this is one of those areas where the Left and Francoist Right converge.
Whether all, most or only many Jews or Israelis today stand in opposition to Islamic expansion is irrelevant to those behind the 2018 version of “Jews - get out!” they are targeted because many are and the rest are suspected to be.
Likewise, irrespective of the actual proportion of Jews who were allies of Islamic invasion/occupation at the time of the 1498 version of “Jews - get out!” they were all targeted because many were and all were suspected be.
Then and now we see the same reliance on assumptions for the same rough justice - but based on opposite suspicions. And that BIG DIFFERENCE was the subject of my post.

The Francoist Right at this juncture are probably FINOs, who are hand in glove with the Left. They used to be all remorseful about the Inquisition and the expulsion and all that, or at leas so I read. I doubt anyone can keep that up. Probably in America after a few generations of rote shiboleth-mumbling PC, there will be an explosion of blatant racism and sheets will be the latest fashion. What happens when you rub people’s noses excessively in the sins of past generations. Eventually there is an equal and opposite reaction.
If you missed it, the bad guys took power in Spain last month without an election, a motion of non confidence against the shaky minority government of Mariano Rajoy was passed and Senior Socialist took over.
