Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King, a leading voice on the left, declared on Twitter Wednesday: “The 4th of July was [sic] always been a sham. Always.”
King, who received BET’s “humanitarian hero” award last weekend, was commenting on a quote from abolitionist — and, later, Republican — Frederick Douglass.
In 1852, Douglass delivered a speech about the Fourth of July. King referenced a single passage in which Douglass said:
What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciations of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade, and solemnity, are, to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy — a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices, more shocking and bloody, than are the people of these United States, at this very hour.

I chuckle each time that guy is referenced by that moniker.

It was such a sham that we never went to war with Britain, never formed the constitution then never had the Republicans fight to free the slaves and starting a civil war so that this twit can act all sanctimonious.
Since the present-day calendar has been in use there is always been a Fourth of July. I think this dude is alluding to Independence Day. But perhaps not.
I am not a historian or expert on slavery, by any stretch, but I think it’s important to recognize that slavery existed in the American colonies well before the American Revolution. Some estimates are that ~20% of the population in the 13 colonies were slaves in 1776. I don’t know what England thought about that at the time, but I haven’t seen anything that suggests that England was trying to free the slaves from the colonies. My point is that the Declaration of Independence, and the American Revolution, if anything accelerated the end of slavery. All in our nation have reason to celebrate this event.
