A black Oregon state representative says one of her constituents called police on her Tuesday while she was canvassing alone in a neighborhood she represents.
Rep. Janelle Bynum, a Democrat who is running for a second term this fall in the state House of Representatives, said she was knocking on doors and talking to residents for two hours along Southeast 125th Avenue in Clackamas. She was taking notes on her cellphone from the conversation she'd had with someone at the second to last of about 30 homes on her list around 5:10 p.m. when a Clackamas County deputy pulled up to her.
She looked over at the deputy in his patrol car and thought, "I don't believe this." He asked if she was selling something. She introduced herself as a state legislator and said that she was out canvassing and that she guessed someone called him.
The deputy said someone called and reported Bynum appearing to spend a long time at houses in the area and appearing to be casing the neighborhood while on her phone.
Bynum, 43, said taking notes on her cellphone is something she often does while canvassing neighborhoods to recall conversations she has. She said she only had campaign fliers, her cellphone and a pen on her.
"It was just bizarre," Bynum told The Oregonian/OregonLive. "It boils down to people not knowing their neighbors and people having a sense of fear in their neighborhoods, which is kind of my job to help eradicate. But at the end of the day, it's important for people to feel like they can talk to each other to help minimize misunderstandings."

But there was time for a pic
To do this where I live requires a permit.
darn. I hadn’t thought to post that.
“If you see something, say something.” Real life is not like TV commercials or other liberal casting fantasies, lady. At least some Somali cop didn’t shoot you.
She, of course, wants to pretend that the call was made due to her skin color, and not because she was trolling through a neighborhood in a suspicious manner. 30 years ago, that would not be an issue. Today, a stranger scoping out homes in a neighborhood and taking notes is CLEARLY a suspicious activity.
Let's have a few males hang out for hours at children's playgrounds with no kids of their own, and start interacting with the kids. Nobody should be suspicious if they are of a Protected Class, right?
So she was going door to door and someone wanted her checked out. This proves what?
On one side, good people notice but figure it was more than this.
The real racists are those who accuse their opponents of racism.
Permit? Selling, yes, but campaigning? That seems like it would violate first amendment.
Aren’t we told: “If you see something, say something”
BPIC Black person in Clackamas.
There was a Supreme Court decision from 2002 I believe that declared such permits unconstitutional. They are allowed to solicit or campaign, you are allowed to tell them to go to hell or ignore them.
> If you see something, say something. <
That was actually my first thought as well. Were the cops called because the lady was a stranger in the neighborhood, or were they called simply because she is black?
I guess only the caller knows for sure. But it’s sad that in today’s America it’s so easy to be labeled a racist.
Teenage drivers have high accident rates, therefore, higher car insurance rates.
Blacks are involved in crime at many times the rate of nonblacks. Therefore they get mistaken for criminals more often than nonblacks.
But equal logic cant be applied here because blacks have Black Race Privilege and rules and laws that apply to others don’t apply to them.
So what if she was rummaging through people’s garages.
We and our neighbors routinely call the cops when we have unlicensed solicitors, peddlers, or strangers lurking in or canvassing our neighborhood. We don’t care one whit if the person is white, brown, yellow, black, purple, crimson, or chartreuse. We are equal opportunity cop-callers.
She suffers from the common “it’s racism” syndrome.
