I dislike Merkel, and I may not like her replacement any better. So I am withholding my judgment. Germans may be fed up with status quo, but are still anti-American overall and condescending towards Trump.
If polls are accurate: Germans trust and prefer Putin over Trump. They want to challenge what they see as American grip over European markets. And most don’t feel the impetus to pay more into NATO.
Key figures like former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder now heads the board of Rosneft: keeping Europe addicted to Russian oil while bashing America and Trump ar the same time. So if Merkel leaves, that’s great. But it’s unfortunate if they just get a Russia-bot in her place.
