Seattle city council repeals "head tax" on city's big businesses

Seattle leaders on Tuesday repealed a tax on large companies such as Amazon and Starbucks after a backlash from businesses, a stark reversal from a month ago when the City Council unanimously approved the effort to combat a growing homelessness crisis.

The council voted 7-2 after supporters and opponents packed a meeting with signs saying, "Tax Amazon, housing for all" and "No tax on jobs," with some shouting for more time to discuss the issue. The vote showed Amazon's ability to aggressively push back on government taxes, especially in its affluent hometown where it's the largest employer and where some have criticized it for helping cultivate a widening income gap that is pricing lower-income workers out of housing. ---- In a statement released after the vote, Amazon vice president Drew Herdener said the council's decision was "the right decision for the region's economic prosperity" adding they are "deeply committed to being part of the solution to end homelessness in Seattle."

So, it looks like either A) the Seattle City Council got a hit from the Clue Fairy and realized this 'head tax' was an abysmally bad idea, or B) someone from Amazon, Starbucks, and possibly several other businesses privately met with them and made it clear that they'd be GONE if they went ahead with this idiocy.

Take your pick.

Wrong on both accounts.

Pressure from Amazon had less to do with the reversal as did the grassroots citizenry revolt to overturn the ruling with an initiative.

For those who don't know, the Seattle city council has mismanaged 10's of millions of dollars already and things have only gotten worse.

More vagrants, more crime, more open drug use and public urination and defecation.

Even liberal Seattle citizens were getting sick of major funds going wasted.

7/9 counsel members are up for reelection next year and I doubt any of them will get reelected.

It's a beautiful thing.

Great!

Luv to see Libs having to backtrack.

That is one way to combat Libs/PC — by standing up to them. They will usually back down when confronted.

I am now watching my third Mayor "fight" homelessness by spending money on programs. But the homeless population never goes down, ever.

Will these oh so sophisticated progressives ever admit this problem is about a lot more than money?

Libs can’t stand having to live under their own rules.

Gee, that’s too bad. Amazon would be quite welcome in my no income tax state...

We were just up in Seattle. The disgust for the City Council was pretty much universal.

Indeed. You may very well be right.
Still, I’d like to think Jeff Bezos may have put a bug in the ear of several council members.
