Joe Manchin: Supporting Hillary Clinton in 2016 'was a mistake politically'
Washington Examiner ^ | June 6, 2018 | by Naomi Lim

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said Wednesday he regretted endorsing failed 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, adding he would be "open" to throwing his weight behind President Trump's 2020 re-election bid.

“I’m open to supporting the person who I think is best for my country and my state. If his policies are best, I’ll be right there,” Manchin told Politico Wednesday.

“I’m with him sometimes more than other Republican senators are with him,” he continued later in the interview. “A lot of the policies he’s done [have] been good for the state.”

Manchin recalled how Clinton asked him whether she could campaign in West Virginia in 2016 so she could explain her comments about wanting “to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.”

"I said, ‘That’s a bad idea, you shouldn’t come,’” Manchin remembered.

“It was a mistake. It was a mistake politically,” he said, referring to his support of Clinton.

That's great, Joe. So you'll be supporting PATRICK MORRISEY for US Senate, then.

Good to know! I expect your immediate withdrawal from the Senate election!

He’ll lose - Trump won his state by what - 40 points?

Kiss Joe Manchin buh-bye! His effort to stay relevant is too little, too late.

Trump won WV by 40%. If there’s any justice, this fence-straddling Democrat should be toast.

Why doesn’t he switch parties?

Because he's a disgusting sleazy slimeball, and WE DON'T WANT HIM.

It was a mistake politically...

It wasn't a mistake morally, or ideologically, or from core values, or from representing his fellow citizens of West Virginia.

It was only a mistake politically, because it politically damaged his viability to keep his job. Now, he's "open" to possibly supporting a Republican, but I'd bet that opening would close very quickly if he were reelected.

Manchin is "open" to saying whatever he needs to say to win.

Pat Morrissey will pick up the seat for the GOP.

Hard to believe in 2000, this was a solid Democrat state.

It's also possible that if Al Gore won in 2000, West Virginia would have gone Republican much faster when Gore went after the coal.

Of course, if Gore had won, we wouldn't now have the red/blue meme that came from the Bush Country map of 2000.
