(CNSNews.com) - The federal government cut 3,000 jobs in May and federal employment has now dropped by 24,000 since President Donald Trump took office, according to data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Even as federal government jobs were declining, overall employment was increasing—as was employment in state and local government.

In April, there were 2,789,000 people employed in civilian federal government jobs. In May, that declined to 2,786,000, a drop of 3,000.

In December 2016, the month before Trump took office, there were 2,810,000 civilians employed in the federal government. That has now dropped by 24,000 to the current 2,786,000.

Total government employment in the United States increased by 5,000 in May, climbing from 22,321,000 in April to 22,326,000.

State government employment rose by 2,000 in the month, climbing from 5,110,000 in April to 5,112,000 in May.

Local government employment rose by 6,000 in the month, climbing from 14,422,000 in April to 14,428,000 in May.

About one percent, but I’m happy to hear it.

Yep, a drop in the bucket, but it’s a start.

Hey, under Obama they were hiring at breakneck speeds.

Remember the 40,000 new IRS hires in order to police ObamaCare?

I’d guess that those numbers include military? So, while one is ramping up, the other is ramping down, and there still is a net loss. I’ll take it.

Nice, but with hiring freeze and attrition I am surprised it is not more.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to get rid of Federal workers? Have you ever tried?

Frankly, if they just didn’t replace retirees or those that quit/die it would be awesome. No need to fire anyone.

Since now government jobs, local, state, county and federal pay a higher average than private and include all kinds of benefits including pensions, those jobs are in demand.

Good employees in all branches have and continue to wonder why they work hard when the ghost pay-rollers continue to get paid the same as they do, without having to do any work.

I can’t wait to hear the left complain even louder about how Trump is screwing us out of all the government we need.

Depends what positions are getting cut. I see engineers, logisticians and KO’s getting gobbled up by contractors. That is not always a good thing for the taxpayer.

I think that this is because of attrition rather than firings.

Those leaving were not replaced

Much of that is the governments lack of finding qualified employees. Lots of people do not like working for the government. And because the government has lots of stupid educational requirements for each position that require long and expensive college degrees, many prospects would rather take a private sector job.
