A day after abruptly canceling plans for a June 12 summit with Kim Jong Un in Singapore, the Trump administration renewed hopes on Friday that the meeting is not all but doomed and may still take place.
Following a fiery letter to Kim Jong Un cancelling the meeting on Thursday, Donald Trump tweeted on Friday morning: Very good news to receive the warm and productive statement from North Korea. We will soon see where it will lead, hopefully to long and enduring prosperity and peace. Only time (and talent) will tell!

This message was reiterated by defence secretary James Mattis. Mr Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon: "We got possibly some good news on the Korea summit, where it may, our diplomats can pull it off...diplomats are still are work and from our point of view here at the Defense Department, thats a fine thing."
Mr Mattis dismissed the escalatory talk and what some saw as the end of diplomacy with North Korea.
"Theres enough people talking with no responsibility. Ill let them talk all they want and then well all hope and pray the diplomats pull it off, he said.
The Norths response to Mr Trumps letter shied away from escalation.
"We have inwardly highly appreciated President Trump for having made the bold decision, which any other US president dared not, and made effort for such a crucial event at the summit, Kim Kye Gwan, first vice minister of foreign affairs in North Korea, was reported as saying.

“It will all blow up in their faces after North Korea lobs a few missiles at Japan and some west coast cities. Then we will really own the cons!” - Today’s Prog.
Of course there’s going to be a meeting......one of minds or of another sort! Either way Kims going to have a ‘meet up’!
I doubt they have anything to lop now.
It was NOT a fiery letter. It was diplomatic and matter of fact.
LOL. this straight out of “Art of the Deal”.
Wonder if any NORK was smart enough to read it?
I caught that too. I thought it was a very appropriate letter myself.
Didn’t even take 24-hours for L’il Kim and the Norks to come around.
Kim is in a tough spot. He has a very legitimate concern that if he leaves Pyongyang for this meeting in Singapore, his countrymen might not let him return.
Having the locks changed while you're away is a problem many brutal despots face. That's why they don't really travel much.
Yes, but Kim has also been jerking Trump’s chain a LOT. That doesn’t help the cause you identify. My guess is Trump saw the way Kim was yanking his chain and said, “You want to threaten to walk out? Fine. I’m walking out on my own terms. You want to get serious, I’m serious.”
Neon Revolt had some outstanding analysis on this.
45 sent two tweets:
1. To ‘Kim Jung Un’
2. To ‘Kim Jong Un’
In Korean, Jung means ‘a friend you deeply care about’ and has no exact English equivalent. ‘Jong’ means ‘slave’.
The back-channel diplomacy here is incredible.
BS. Fat face don't know how to act with Trump and now he's humping Trumps leg. And fat face fully understands, any more BS form him and Trump walks. End of story.
And Trump has the hostages and enough firepower to bounce North Korea off the lunar surface. Trump has the position of strength, Kim has zip.
His letter was anything but fiery. It was the height of diplomacy in fact.
Can Kim really leave, actually leave Pyongyang on anything
other than a train? I believe that they are quite embarrassed
by fact that North Korea has no native transcontinental,
trans-oceanic airline capability that they would rather not show up for the meeting.
True that they can fly to China but that's about it.
Make them fly to Washington DC and watch them whine about that.
The art of the deal.
They’re wasting time with fat boy. He was never serious about this. He just wants free stuff.
