Russia quietly conducted the world's longest surface-to-air missile test, according to sources with direct knowledge of U.S. intelligence concerning the weapons program.

The S-500 surface-to-air missile system successfully struck a target 299 miles away, which the U.S. assessed is 50 miles further than any known test, said the sources, who spoke to CNBC on the condition of anonymity.

Russia claims that the ground-based missile system is capable of intercepting hypersonic missiles, drones and aircraft as well as stealth warplanes like the F-22 and the F-35. The S-500 system would expand the Kremlin's capabilities to engage multiple targets with precision strikes.

The cost of shooting down a missile or stealth aircraft far exceeds the cost of the offensive missile or aircraft. They “may have” a system that can do this but I rather doubt it.

Let them build all they want as it will deplete the monies for offensive weapons. We must simply build more offensive weapons which will again make the Soviet Union bankrupt if they try to counter them. That is what the great Ronald Reagan did, and the Soviet Union collapsed due to economics.

The winners in war are determined by industrial and economic might and a will to confront evil.

The gross domestic product of Russia today is about the same as Italy. Italy has but a fraction of the population of Russia. Russia can never win unless we permit them to win.

Russian missile technology has an impressive kill percentages when used to bring down unarmed civilian passenger aircraft that are flying on a constant heading and at a constant altitude.

Gee! It’s like the 1970’s all over again!

The C Team, predecessor to the B Team (Richard Pipes of the B Team just passed away. Lt. Gen. Daniel Graham was a classmate of mine. Never met John Collins of the Library of Congress. They basically were the B Team that changed American history and helped bring about the downfall of the Soviet Union. I’ll toss in Prof. Leon Goure’ into that group (a teacher of mine), along with The Dark Prince Richard Perle (an acquaintance (got photos to prove it) and perhaps Prof. Frtiz Kraemer and his amazing son Sven Kraemer.

One of the greatest groups of Americans ever.

Forgot to add this:

Relative to industrial capacity one must always remember the civil war of the United States.

The South had the superior army and soldiers and achieved great victory at the beginning of the war. The North had great industrial capacity to make the tools of war and a good railway system. The North also had a superior navy and was able to blockade the South from help from Europe. That is why the North won and the South lost. The inferior army of the North won due to industry of the North and a superior navy.

Here’s an insider industry tid bit. During the 90s, the Russians used to send their best fighters and missiles to all world air expos to try and sell them. They even had all of their most advanced air to air missiles on their planes. And by all, I mean that was the only four missiles they had in their entire inventory.

As do I. First Wife was on a trip to China when it happened. I couldn't get in touch due to crappy Travel Agent/Itinerary not having correct phone numbers for hotel.

I called a number for the Hotel and it rang at a Home in Beijing - lucky for Me the People that answered the call spoke perfect English and even looked up the correct number for the Hotel for Me. God was in control of that for sure!!!

Got in touch with Her a few minutes later...

Gee, how many of them can they afford to buy for such a huge country that spans 11 time zones? Plus the fact that their GDP is the size of Italy and their military budget is 10% of ours at about $60 billion ? Maybe the cost of their equipment is a mere 10% of ours and each of those huge missiles cost $75,000 a pop like our Javelin anti-tank missile?

“The latest revelation comes one week after CNBC learned that multiple U.S. intelligence reports assess that Russia will be capable of fielding a hypersonic glide vehicle called Avangard, a weapon that no country can defend against, by 2020.”

I was worried until I read “multiple U.S. intelligence reports” - NOT POSSIBLE - virtually everyone working in our 3-letter agencies was working the election for Hillary. This report is TOTALLY FAKE.

That’s an interesting point. Russia has so many economic and cultural problems you’d think they’d be spending money on those. I recently read forty percent of Russians are actively thinking about emigrating to other countries. Their non-Muslim population is collapsing with the second lowest birth rate in Europe. Their economy is in disarray due to Putin’s war adventures and the resulting sanctions. But, still, they are continually spending money on systems they can’t afford to produce, like their latest tanks and stealth aircraft, for examples.

Unfortunately, the culture is on auto-pilot with nobody looking after it. They are still paranoid...and I’m not saying they aren’t right to be so. Putin has them working on everything except, apparently, solutions to problems that will destroy the country in just thirty to fifty years. Of course, Putin will be long gone when those bills come due.

The desired intent is to be spending more $$$ on the military defense industry to cope with every fictitious threat.

Yep, and so what if they have the weapons. All we have to do is get along with them, and we’re safe, as they’ve shown themselves to be VERY RESPONSIBLE with their hardware. And that plane that did get shot down over Ukraine was probably an accident, which I blame on the airline. No need to be in an area where the captain says “If you look outside the right windows, you’ll see the fireworks going on from the Ukraine Civil War”. Probably best to burn a few extra gallons of jet fuel and go AROUND crap like that.

"Russia claims that the ground-based missile system is capable of intercepting hypersonic missiles, drones and aircraft as well as stealth warplanes like the F-22 and the F-35."

Russia can see those aircraft, maybe, somewhat, sometimes. But they can't hit 'em. Notice the timing of that statement, too, reminiscent of the exclamations of Iran. But the following, yes.

Damning MH17 findings: Missile was from Russian armed forces

We know the Israelis were worried about S-400s in Syria. I think Assad doesn't even have S-300s at the present time.
