Last week, a congressman from Alabama who serves on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology suggested in a public hearing that sea level rise may be caused by erosion - a possibility experts rate somewhere between absurd and laughable. But its hardly surprising. The willingness of climate change skeptics to grasp onto any alternative other than a warming planet fueled by greenhouse gas emissions (along with melting ice and oceans expanding as they warm) is commonly observed.
Closer to home, the Chesapeake Bay is surrounded by towns and villages where the politically conservative residents refuse to accept scientific evidence of global warming even as the tides rise and their waterfront properties are consumed. Last June, Scientific American magazine dispatched a reporter to Deal Island who had little trouble finding locals who say its the erosion theyve observed all their lives and not climate change that they have reason to fear - despite studies that show their homes will be completely underwater by the end of the century because of the climate, not erosion. The same point of view is commonplace where President Donald Trump famously assured Mayor Eskridge last year in a phone call that Your island has been there for hundreds of years, and I believe your island will be there for hundreds more."
Call such behavior wishful thinking, denial or even political opportunism, but at some point, theres an underlying problem - lack of information. In these politically polarized times when tribalism trumps facts, there are some who have dismissed climate change without being given an opportunity to be full informed about the evidence. And even given that opportunity by a newspaper article, for example - there is a temptation to dismiss the messenger as biased and and the mainstream news media as deliberately misleading.

...as a result the price of beach-front properties is crashing....oops....guess not...oops...fake news at its best.
A journalist pretending to understand science?
A journalist pretending to understand science?
Nice try, left of the Bell Curve dweller.
Dumb*ss.
Liberals keep pushing settled climate change on us and then rule any skepticism is climate change denial.
After all, all those rising waters will inundunate you... long after you’re dead.
Not to late to build some dykes.
When you repeat a lie often enough it becomes the truth. Or whatever. So, why do you keep posting this nonsense over and over and over?
Why do global warming scientologists demand 100% buy-in? They have the votes where they live. Most CO2 emissions are made for the benefit of city slickers, who purposely choose a high spend high emissions lifestyle, and on top of it import millions of third worlders to make city living even more unbearable. They should tax and regulate themselves into extinction already. Leave the rest of us out of it.
Simple solution to climate change. All we have to do is give up our air conditioners, microwave ovens, cell phones, computers, hairdryers, TVs, refrigerators, BBQ’s, lawn mowers, cars, trucks, boats and planes, factories, farms, heavy industry, etc. Burn no coal, no gas, no oil, no wood, no nukes. We won’t have jobs, homes, money, food, or freedom but we’ll save the planet. The future under world wide godless socialism where we’re all equally without is so grand.
The rulers need their indulgences—the rest of us can live in dire poverty.
That is the “climate change” agenda.
“Not too late to build some dykes.’
I guess we’re safe then.
Coastal, low-lying areas like San Francisco and New York city already have a stockpile of Dykes.
I’ll listen to what they have to say at their next conference if they get there by foot, bike or rowboat.
Just go down to “The Grove”.
Sea levels began to rise 18k years ago at the end of the last glacial period. They have risen about 135 meters since then which is an average of 7.5 millimeters per year. That is an average of 750 mm per century (29.5 inches) which is far more than the average over the last century.
From 1880 to 2000 sea level rose about 20 cm or just under 8 inches. Far less than the nearly 30 inches per century average over the last 18,000 years.
The most recent data from NASA shows a decline in sea level.
Inconvenient: NASA shows global sea level pausing, instead of rising
That is why my highball doesn't overflow as the ice cooling my favorite adult beverage melts.
This article is yet another reason the Baltimore Sun is referred to as the “Baltimore Democrat Party Daily Newsletter.”
So, the editorial board of the fishwrap know far more than lifelong residents of the island. I expect the editors have never visited the island.
You ever notice how leftists accuse others which THEY THEMSELVES are Guilty of ?
Ignoring Sun Activity, Long term natural climate shifts (like those Ice ages leftards make believe in or RATHER willfully ignore). Closed minded people shgouldnt be so ready to point at others as CLOSED MINDED.
I suggest they give up their Cars, home heating, air conditioning — if they really believe what they say. Strangely they would never do so and instead start shrieking and run away at the suggestion that THEY PRACTICE WHAT THEY PREACH.
A liberal will NEVER practice what they preach until everyone else is forced to do so as well.
Oh, my. Didn't Hussein pass those out for free? And what else would the leftists look at while driving their fossil fuel burning electric cars? The road? Pfffft. They won't give 'em up. Not a chance.
