For the first time in at least two years, a major pollster has Democrats trailing in the midterms — at least for a day. When last we looked at the Reuters tracking poll, Democrats’ lead in the generic congressional ballot question had dwindled down to a single point. Yesterday, their five-day rolling average finally crossed the red Rubicon, as this graphic from polling editor Chris Kahn demonstrates, following up with another look at the same data today:
Not just “as likely,” but slightly more likely, 38.1% to 36.7%. According to RealClearPolitics aggregation, it would be the first time that any pollster has reported a Republican lead in the generic ballot since Trump took office. That distinction may have to wait, however; Reuters usually reports their results on a weekly basis, and their next reporting period wraps up today. The numbers might tick around back to the Democrats depending on survey results, but it won’t be by much.
Even if this holds, it will be an outlier, at least for now. However, Republican momentum has begun expressing itself in other ways, enough to move the Cook Political Report to change direction. David Wasserman noted the trend in moving four battleground House seats in the GOP’s direction:

The mainstream polls will continue to report that it is close. When it is close, there is more interest...More importantly, those who pay for polls will poll more often when it is close. Just like the Murphys and Podestas of political consulting, the pollsters game the system to benefit themselves. Only because suckers like Jeb’s donors come up with big money do the pollsters favor them.
Trump never paid pollsters big money, certainly not the mainstream pollsters. So they have a reason to not like him. It isn’t personal, it’s business ... to paraphrase Any which way you can.

And this is before the President does the fall campaign blitz. Unlike the spineless Congressional GOP “leadership”, the President has the ability to speak clearly on major issues that are important to voters. He could swing a number of races by rallying the troops to support his agenda that has been somewhat stalled by the weakness of Ryan and McConnell.

Let’s hope the blue wave is gone - what with the probability of ‘rats picking up seats in Pennsylvania due to the chicanery of their Supreme Court invalidating the election map everyone’s accustomed to and maybe a couple in deep blue New Jersey because of retiring Republicans, it’s likely to be a very close election nation-wide.....

Say what you will about Republicans, but at least they’re not crazy enough to rally around MS-13. Trump just has to keep exposing the left’s insanity, and it’s like electoral mana from heaven for the Congressional GOP.
