Senate panel overwhelmingly approves amendment blocking Trump on ZTE

A Senate panel on Tuesday rebuked President Trump's efforts to ease sanctions on the Chinese telecom firm ZTE, which the intelligence community and trade regulators have warned poses a national security risk for the U.S.

The Senate Banking Committee approved an amendment in an overwhelming and bipartisan 23-2 vote that would block Trump from easing sanctions on ZTE without first certifying to Congress that the company is complying with U.S. law.

The move comes the same day The Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration and China are closing in on a deal to ease off ZTE in exchange for trade concessions. That report raised concerns among lawmakers of both parties who have advocated for a crackdown on Chinese technology companies.

“If the president and his team won’t follow through on tough sanctions against ZTE, it’s up to Congress to ensure that it happens," Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement.

When the majority are siding with Schumer 23 to 2, you realize RINOs are not an endangered species. That guy has perhaps taken the right side on five (being overly generous here) pieces of legislation in his tenure in the U. S. Senate.

Trump knows it would come out this way. But he told the Chinese guy he would ask. So he asked.

Maybe that was his whole point then, making the Grand Gesture. If so, it helps the Chinese to save face in cooperating with Trump on Trade.

Schumer is a POWER HUNGRY traitor and a DEAF TRAITOR too!

Ditto for the RINOS who voted with him.

DID THEY NEGLECT TO HEAR POTUS TALK ABOUT THE $1.4 BILLION FINE HE PLANNED TO IMPOSE ON ZTE?

Trump outsmarted them again.

Trump WANTED this outcome.

This way, ZTE is screwed yet Trump is still sorta “the Nice Guy”.

Trump KNEW if the measure had his name on it, THIS would happen.

Folks... this is actually not a bad thing. ZTE has been very active in violating US law. For example, they massively evaded sanctions on Iran and conducted illegal trade with Iran.

Not sure why security issues exist with ZTE and not with Motorola and Alcatel phones, which are made by Lenovo and TCL, both of which are Chinese state-owned companies. I’m surprised that we allow *any* phones made by Chinese companies to put out firmware updates from servers in China. That’s where the risk really lies. All firmware updates they publish should have to go through US government monitors who inspect their software for viruses, trojans and backdoors.

Remember when the Democrats were all over Trump for threatening a trade war with China and now he’s maneuvered them into waging it for him!

What a bunch of TOOLS!!!!!

Totally agree. This was just a part of the negotiation. People will always believe Trump (like they did Reagan) a shallow person. They continue to be surprised. This doesn’t surprise me at all.
