F.B.I. Used Informant to Investigate Russia Ties to Campaign, Not to Spy, as Trump Claims
New York Times ^ | 18 May 2018 | Adam Goldman, Mark Mazzetti and Matthew Rosenberg

Posted on 05/19/2018 4:32:28 AM PDT by Magnatron

President Trump accused the F.B.I. on Friday, without evidence, of sending a spy to secretly infiltrate his 2016 campaign “for political purposes” even before the bureau had any inkling of the “phony Russia hoax.”

In fact, F.B.I. agents sent an informant to talk to two campaign advisers only after they received evidence that the pair had suspicious contacts linked to Russia during the campaign. The informant, an American academic who teaches in Britain, made contact late that summer with one campaign adviser, George Papadopoulos, according to people familiar with the matter. He also met repeatedly in the ensuing months with the other aide, Carter Page, who was also under F.B.I. scrutiny for his ties to Russia.

The role of the informant is at the heart of the newest battle between top law enforcement officials and Mr. Trump’s congressional allies over the F.B.I.’s most politically charged investigations in decades. The lawmakers, who say they are concerned that federal investigators are abusing their authority, have demanded documents from the Justice Department about the informant.

Law enforcement officials have refused, saying that handing over the documents would imperil both the source’s anonymity and safety. The New York Times has learned the source’s identity but typically does not name informants to preserve their safety.

He was told of the conspiracy by Adm Mike rogers, Director of NSA.

Not by anyone in DOJ/FBI.

If this non-spy spy was so innocuous, why did it take so long for all those “officials” of the Deep State to come forward and admit the wonderful way that they were protecting the President?

Do the people at the NYT really think we are that dumb and dopey?

If what they are claiming were true, Non=spy would have been on 60 minutes in 2016.

What the NYT needs to be challenged on is who gave the orders to start the spying on a Republican candidate.

They aren't going down that road unless it is by screaming and kicking. I've seen enough news accounts and blog sleuthing to speculate it was run directly from the WH. Comey didn't decided to bypass LL and BO to clear Hillary and go after Trump on his own.

Yes! This is why the FBI and Intelligence agencies coordinated with Trump to prevent Russian influence.

If they were gathering info on the Russkies, why could they not tell Trump, and why did they not put a spy into the Hitlery campaign?

Why was Samantha Powers requesting identity on Americans? Did Cass Sunstein read any of this?

FBI lives will be lost if the mole they put in the trump campaign is exposed BULLSHIT maybe the crooked FBI should not be spying on a presidential candidate to help another candidate this is what the KGB does not the FBI people need to go to jail for this

This hand wringing from the FBI about the name of their mole in the Trump campaign is nothing more than CYA because they got caught spying on one campaign to help[ another there should be a SC and people need to go to jail

F.B.I. Used Informant to Investigate Russia Ties to Campaign, Not to Spy, as Trump Claims maybe they should tell us dumb asses what the difference is? Of course we should believe the FBI they would never lie about anything. Given what has been exposed they want us to believe they were just checking on Russian not the people in the campaign were doing.

True, but I refuse to believe that all agents of the FBI are corrupt, and it is even odds that an FBI agent tipped off the NSA.

I’ve heard this “informant” (aka spy) was paid over $200,000. Is that the going rate for a few month’s work for a spy, because that seems like a pretty nice gig.

Want to bet that the money to pay for this FBI spy came ultimately from the Clinton campaign? I mean it might be a little hard to justify the $200,000 salary for a few months work if this guy was on the regular FBI payroll.
