“Ford and GM are pretty much doing the same.”

Yes, and the foreign automakers have driven the “Big Three” out of the automobile market. I read the other day that 85 % of GM’s sales are non-personal automobiles, and it’s worse for Ford and Chrysler at 95% and 97% trucks and SUV’s. I drove down the local “auto row” in Napa, CA yesterday. The Ford and Chevy dealers are across the street from one another, and their lots are 95% pickups and SUVs. But just down the street at the Toyota “store,” which is owned by the same guy who’s the Chevy dealer, they have a mix of cars and trucks.
But the other thing we should consider is that thanks to the CAFE standards, the family station wagon is long gone, replaced by the pickup and the SUV. Americans, in the main, will not be forced into econoboxes by the Feds. We’re on our second Avanche. I’m really sorry that GM quit making them ( we bought one of the last one’s they produced). They can haul stuff, pull 8,000lb, and yet give 5 people a luxury leather seating.

GM stopped making them because people stopped buying them. The mid gate was useless, it leaked for many people and aside from that there wasn’t any compelling reason to get one instead of a cheaper crew cab pickup.

“How is it a WIN for the other 99.9% of us who don’t work for an auto company or own auto company stock, but will have to pay the higher prices?”

How is it a win to you to let your industry be invaded by foreigners??

I read his book and that problem is over. It’s 2018 if you haven’t looked. And the product coming out of China are mostly inferior especially car parts.

America has no automobile imbalance of trade.

Americans have the imbalance and it is not a problem

The imbalance is the result of individual purchases. It is not soverign in nature

Except it isn’t. In fact, the bad old days are here again. . Ford’s current Fusion is a great example. The in car entertainment and information systems are at least five years behind those of the competition, the car is lacking key market technologies (at any price) that come standard on the competition, it costs more than the competition, it has a joke of a warranty, it’s long in the tooth and Ford has yet to fix significant known problems with it despite having had years to do so. It’s lost it’s high reliability reputation (first gen Fusion beat the Camry on quality on several fronts) because they cheaped out on several areas.

Also? The Chinese parts and cars aren’t coming over from the Asian Marques. They’re coming over as GMs and Chrysler’s and soon possibly Fords. That’s part of why people don’t want the Big Three’s sedans - too much Chinese crap.

“In 2017, the total U.S. trade deficit was $566 billion. It imported $2.895 trillion of goods and services while exporting $2.329 trillion.

America imported $359 billion worth of automobiles and parts, while only exporting $158 billion. That added $201 billion to the deficit.”

Yes, I know BMW is in SC and Toyota in KY. But don’t be fooled into thinking most of the foreign cars are being produced here. $201 billion trade deficit in autos is around 40 PERCENT of our entire trade deficit.

A 25% tariff on auto/auto part imports is appropriate. This will force nearly ALL foreign cars to be made in the USA.

Proof: China has a 25% tariff on auto imports. Most cars sold in China are made there.

I have a Ford sedan, and like it. Ford is getting out because they make more money off of high end SUV’s that people like.

It's a win because wages will rise and people will have jobs.

Only for a tiny few people who work in the auto industry. For everyone else it's a Loose-Loose because they will pay higher prices.

Invaded?

Consumers win when prices are lower. Taxes of any kind, especially tariffs, are a dead loss to consumers.

“Consumers win when prices are lower. “

Not even close.

How is being an unemployed consumer good for them when their jobs go overseas??

Why is it fair to Americans to have laws and regulations to protect workers and themselves only to have those laws and regulations circumvented by a third-world nation that puts the American out of work??

If you want third-world products, then go live there and buy all you want.

The 30 year globalist experiment in "Free Trade" is an abject failure. Why? because the rest of the of world didn't play along and used us.

When you buy a foreign made import you are are actually hiring foreign nationals to build, assemble, ship that product. You are picking foreign workers over Americans. That is the reality of what is happening with trade. Those foreign workers are not paying income taxes to uncle Sam and those imports come in duty free! OTH our workers are burdened with regs and taxes.

Face it. You are evil an you globalists WILL BE DEFEATED. I am not going to argue with a fascist Free Traitor™. The evidence is all around. We HAVE a $500B trade deficit because of you trade chimps every year.

The election of Mr. trump not withstanding! LOL.

YOU WILL BE DEFEATED. Like the communists and fascists before you, globalists and globalism will go down. It's inevitable because the current world economic situation IS NOT SUSTAINABLE.

“GM stopped making them because people stopped buying them.”

GM stoppet making them primarily because of the bailout. The Avalance’ deimise was part of their “product realignment. As for the midgate, neither of mine have ever leaked a drop. I know some guys with motorcycles liked to “crank their bikes” up against it like it was the front end of a pickup bed and bent it. It wasn’t intended to take that kind of load. Since it’s essentially a Suburban, it rides like one, not like a pickup. You pays your money and takes your choices. I’d buy another one in a heartbeat!

Jobs don't go overseas. You give your job up when you refuse to work for what your job is really worth.

Why is it fair to Americans to have laws and regulations to protect workers and themselves only to have those laws and regulations circumvented by a third-world nation that puts the American out of work??

The solution to that is to get rid of those regulations. The free market is the best protection you can have without stealing from or aggressing against other people.

If you want third-world products, then go live there and buy all you want.

If you want government products go live in a communist country.

No you can't. You can only say it for the tiny few who are benefiting the tariff.
