Americans are more anxious than ever over paying their bills

Americans are stressed out.

People are plagued by financial anxiety, according to the results of an annual poll of 1,004 adults conducted by the American Psychiatric Association released Monday.

This year’s national anxiety score — derived by mean scores on a scale of zero to 100 — is 51, a five-point jump since 2017. Two-thirds of respondents said they were extremely or somewhat anxious about paying their bills or expenses. Last year, 56 percent of people reported financial worries.

But some people are more worried than others about finances. Women are more anxious than men and also had a greater increase in anxiety than men this year compared to last year. More than half (57 percent) of women 18 to 49 years of age reported being more anxious this year, compared to 38 percent of men in that age group.

Nearly four in five Hispanic adults reported concerns about paying the bills, as did three-quarters of women and young adults (ages 18 to 34).

Only 19 percent of people reported being less anxious than they were a year ago, whereas 39 percent were more worried. “That increased stress and anxiety can significantly impact many aspects of people’s lives, including their mental health, and it can affect families,” APA president Anita Everett said in the report. Only anxieties about health and safety outranked financial anxiety.

You don’t see 80 year olds bagging groceries because they’re bored, I’ll tell you that.

I’m an oddball. I actually look forward to dispensing with bills by paying them. The simple reason is what’s left over I can blow on toys.

The folks with high anxiety are the opposite. They blow their check on things they do not need or cannot afford, then sweat out how to pay for it all. They’ve created their own problems. They just need to live with it.

Well having nothing to real to worry about this generation has always been busy manufacturing things to be afraid of.

This is about as stupid an article as one could manufacture.
Consumer confidence and spending at all time highs but this fake poll shows people scared of their financial future?

Here an idea for you fearful ones, stop living beyond your means.

Study is 41% Democrat/ Leans Democrat; 33% Republican / Leans Republican; 23% Independent; 3 “other”. As usual, weighted toward Democrats.

Looks like a poll right before the election!

Frankly, the way Trump is Winning!, they probably should be a little anxious. On top of that, looking at their old and tired leadership: Hillary, Nancy, Chuck and Bernie - more reason to be anxious. They should just convert to the GOP and they can calm down.

Of course, the more anxious people look, they more they will want a Psychiatrist - but I’m sure that didn’t impact the survey results.

I’ve got to admit, my current situation (retired, no debt, no work stress, doing what I want, enough cash to pay my FEW bills, etc.) is the BEST time of my life so far!

They polled 1,400 +/- people who hove poor money-management skills or are just a bunch of immature losers with no money-making skills or a bunch of kids and/or toys they can’t afford.

I have NEVER felt more hopeful for America to overcome Socialism as I do these days, too.

MAGA!

"You don’t see 80 year olds bagging groceries because they’re bored, I’ll tell you that."

Oh I don't know. My sister retired at the age of 50 after working for 33 years for Rochester Telephone. She had no outside interests, no hobbies, got bored, and decided to go work at the local grocery store. She certainly didn't need the money, and all she did was bitch about how the managers wouldn't bother to properly supervise the younger workers, and continually relied on the older employees because they could be counted on. Even when she got into her 60's, she had to have something else to do so she started volunteering at one of the hospitals just to fill in her time. Some people just don't know how to enjoy retirement, and some people just can't accept being on their own without having outside stimulus. I know there are plenty of retired people who need the extra cash to survive. I thank my lucky stars that I'm not one of them. Been divorced since '79, my kids moved out long ago, didn't have an IRA and don't have any savings. Thankfully, my pension and social security provide for my needs, and I love my privacy and solitude.

There is not a waking moment when I am not worried about how to cope with all the bills and taxes . I fear this anxiety will accompany me to the grave ,

So women and hispanics are worried. Liberals have successfully scared them that Trump will ruin their lives. Democrats: Making people miserable since 1912.

I often feel sick to my stomach whenever I spend any substantial amount of money, and I never enjoy it. It's just who I am. I value security and peace of mind much, much more than things, and I just could never live paycheck to paycheck. It would kill me. I try to live significantly below my means, with the exception of things that are required for the health, happiness, and well-being of my family. I'm not in any way passing judgment on anyone. I just wonder how people sleep at night with debt hanging over their heads.

Trash dumpster is 30 yards away from my apt - I can see them and there are people from 25-75 years old in and out of there all day and night.

Helluva motivation - I will tell you that.
