Low-income Californians most vulnerable as climate change exacerbates air pollution, report says
San Jose Mercury-News ^ | April 29, 2018 | By CLAUDIA BOYD-BARRETT

California’s air pollution levels are among the worst in the country, and climate change is making the situation worse, according to a new report from the American Lung Association.

Despite the state’s efforts to reign in air pollution, 90 percent of California residents are exposed to unhealthy air at some point during the year, according to the State of the Air 2018 report.

While air pollution is bad for everyone’s health, low-income communities, children, seniors, and people with underlying health problems tend to be most impacted when ozone and particle pollution levels soar, experts said.

Afif El-Hasan, a pediatrician in Orange County, said the poor are more likely than wealthier people to live close to freeways, railways, factories, transportation hubs and other air pollution sources because rents and home prices in those areas are cheaper.

Low-income people face additional hurdles when it comes to protecting themselves from air pollution, he explained. They may have to keep their windows open on smoggy days because they can’t afford air conditioning, and they may have to ride bikes or stand at bus stops on smog-choked streets because they don’t have a car. Often, poor people also have a harder time accessing preventative care, he said.

The health impacts of air pollution are particularly grave for children, El-Hasan added. Children who grow up in polluted areas have been shown to develop less lung capacity than children who live in healthy air, he said. That can leave them more vulnerable to lung problems as they age, he said.

“That is a horrible thing to do to children,” he said. “It’s not fair.”

California’s air pollution levels are among the worst in the country

The California legislature should pass a law that all Democrats should do their part and stop exhaling CO2 into the atmosphere. That will stop pollution and global warming at the same time.

Some of the millions on taxpayer funded entitlements can barely see their benefit statements, EBT cards, Section 8 housing payments and medical benefit statements, the pollution is so heavy.

Both Hwy 101 and I-5 have exits at the Mexican border.

There is a solution.

You knew it was coming ... “women, children, and The Poor hardest hit.”

It’s a broken record.

Baloney!

Afif should get around more-——that’s certainly not true in MA .

I thought the people of California were threatened by waiters who use the wrong gender pronouns and bring you straws you didn’t ask for.

Isn’t that why they’re jailing waiters?

Pure BS. California was smoggy from Native American cook fires when the first Spanish ships arrived at what is now Los Angeles.

I suspect huge numbers of illegals are cooking on fires and charcoal grills today. They are doing all kinds of things prohibited to law-abiding California’s, and the authorities don’t enforce the law. (Like the law against having charcoal grills). Read a few of Victor Davis Hanson’s columns on the subject.

Is there any evidence that air pollution in the US since the 1990s has any harmful effects on people? The air is cleaner in the US than in any industrialized country.

I was working on a project for a municipal waste incinerator in Florida years ago. The requirement for dioxin in the exhaust was the estimated level that one person in 1 million could get sick if they breathed the exhaust air for 70 years. I said that anyone who put their mouth on the exhaust stack for 70 years was stupid, and deserved to get sick.

The irony ...

“Poor Californians” would be some of the first targets of the population control freaks if they ever got traction.

The air pollution in Californicatia just might be from people pooping on the sidewalks.

Is this guy implying that that polluted air remains static - that it stays near freeways, railways, factories, transportation hubs and other air pollution sources?
