Sluggish recovery from Hurricane Maria reignites calls for Puerto Rico’s statehood, independence
Washington Post ^ | April 29, 2018 | Arelis Hernández

Ernesto Davila Marin was in elementary school when rebellion interrupted class. As he left the schoolhouse that October day, black smoke rose from the town center where nationalists had set Jayuya ablaze, shooting police officers and declaring the independent republic of Puerto Rico from a rooftop. In the struggle for sovereignty from American colonial rule, Puerto Rican independence fighters staged uprisings in nearly a dozen cities that day in 1950 and later attempted to assassinate President Harry S. Truman. They held the central mountain city for three days until U.S. Air Force bombers buzzed over the emerald peaks packed with payloads.

Free Puerto Rico! Independence is the only just reward foe all we have done to Puerto Rico! /s/ If these people think they are going to saddle America with another two permanent Democrat Senators and 3 permanent Democrat Congresspersons and THEN stick their hand out and say “Pay me!” they are loco!

I am 100% in changing the status quo...independence for PR and elimination of US citizenship for Puerto Ricans.

The only reason why I might disagree with this is 1) if we truly need PR as a naval/military base or 2) if there's a real chance that an enemy (China,Russia,Venezuela,Cuba, etc) might succeed in filling the vacuum created by our departure.

Statehood? No way,Jose! Independence? Maybe, maybe not.It could well be that the current arrangement is the least harmful to the US of the three options available.

Right! Cut them loose. They’re an albatross, and a parasite upon the USA.

My one trip there was downright scary. Bars on everyone’s windows, and houses fenced in and locked. We were advised by the hotel to NOT leave the grounds by yourself.

It’s a hellhole, and needs to cut-the-f^^^-loose from us.

Independent statehood? How does that work?

Since the rising voices are from opposing sides they cancel each other out.

An independent PR would greatly empower that island with realized responsibility, and with responsibility comes maturation.

I was there some years ago (12-15?) for a corporate event. Exactly my reaction. I was nervous being unarmed in a place where the locals buy wrought iron and razor wire by the ton.

Haven’t been back, not planning on it.

Any other island (including desperate Cuba) would allow us to open naval bases, though I’m not sure what they offer that Florida islands don’t.

As far as Red China, etc. filling a vacuum, they are already entrenched in Cuba and Venezuela. If they couldn’t be bothered with Haiti, they probably couldn’t be bothered with Puerto Rico.

To top off all the other crime, someone at the airport ripped open my suitcase by destroying the zipper, and rifled through my stuff...luckily, it contained only clothes, and I guess they were after bigger quarry, because, nothing was missing.

Puerto Rico should be let go to be independent.

But they will never do it.

They live by sucking on the US Government teat.

Work harder, taxpayers, 4 million Puerto Ricans are counting on your money.
