Hank Azaria willing to 'step aside' from playing Apu on 'The Simpsons'

Hank Azaria says his "eyes have been opened" and he's willing to "step aside" from playing his controversial "Simpsons" character.

The actor appeared on Tuesday's episode of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and talked about the fallout surrounding the character he voices, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.

Comedian Hari Kondabolu's documentary "The Problem with Apu" debuted last November and looked at the character as a negative, stereotypical representation of South Asians.

Nahasapeemapetilon, a Indian-American character with a thick accent, operates the Kwik-E-Mart convenience store in the fictional town of Springfield. The show recently aired a response to complaints about him.

Comedy is truly dead. The left has destroyed it entirely. The "I'm Offended" industry has wiped it out and it's likely never to return.

As someone who years ago tried to break into standup, it's shocking to me how far we've fallen.

Liberals absolutely lay waste to everything they touch.

He probably gets paid the same under the current contract whether he voices five characters or four.

It is stereotypical, but it is not ill-natured.

So maybe an Indian actor might be willing to voice the part if they can find someone who agrees that it is in good humor.

Crazy to think that if the Simpsons was real-time, Bart would almost be 40 by now.

As someone who used to crack inappropriate jokes all the time. I've mostly shut up until I know you. I'm stuck with ,” I asked my wife if she wanted to have sex”, she said “with who”? and why do crabs make such terrible siblings? because they're too shellfish...

...looked at the character as a negative, stereotypical representation of South Asians...

Silly me, I've always viewed the "stereotype" used for the character Apu as a positive one. He is depicted as an affable, hard-working immigrant successfully running a business in his adopted country. He loves and cares for his family and he maintains lasting and supportive friendships in the community.

Plus, The Simpsons show is a satirical comedy - a cartoon - and anyone who takes the "insulting" parts of it seriously is either a moron, a member of the perpetually offended class, or both.

QFT: “Plus, The Simpsons show is a satirical comedy - a cartoon - and anyone who takes the “insulting” parts of it seriously is either a moron, a member of the perpetually offended class, or both.”

Ditto to the moon & back on this ^^^^. Personally, I’m marking the “taking it seriously” crowd in both columns because being perpetually offended is certainly proof of being a moron. True humor has to have some measure of reality in it for people to understand the humor and “The Simpsons” has that in spades.

Well, perhaps the show should change a bit with the times. Kill off Apu in some stereotypically Indian way (eaten by a tiger, or whatever) and have the Kwik-E-Mart re-open as a Vape shop run by Marge’s twin sisters.

Right, he’s one of the few intelligent and decent people on the show. What if white people took offense at Mr. Burns or Homer?
