White House privately skeptical of North Korea's promise to freeze nuclear testing
Chicago Tribune ^ | 22 April 2018 | David Nakamura and John Hudson

Much of the domestic press here in Japan is very, very skeptical about this overture, and statements by Kim and the ruling Korean Workers Party.

Even the CONSERVATIVE daily news SANKEI SHIMBUN today had some good quotes about how this could be no concession at all, North just playing a shell and delay game, offering to close nuke sites that have been essentially destroyed already through too many underground tests, etc. etc. etc.

Not just the White House. And not just privately.

This should be the above text:

"The Trump White House is reacting skeptically in private to North Korea's announcement of plans to freeze nuclear weapons testing, warning that dictator Kim Jong Un could be setting a trap and vowing not to back off a hard-line stance ahead of a potential leaders' summit. President Donald Trump called Pyongyang's move "progress" and "good news" in a pair of tweets after the news broke Friday evening. Behind the scenes, however, his aides cautioned Saturday that Kim's statement that the North would halt testing and shutter one nuclear facility was more notable for what he left out: a direct pledge to work toward nuclear disarmament."

Yeah, and what Kim Jong Un really wants is a deal like the naïve Obama White House gave the ayatollahs of Iran.

That won’t happen with Trump, and I think Kim knows it.

I don’t think Obama was at all naïve in the Iran deal. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Privately?

When he tells 50 million people in a tweet?

....We are a long way from conclusion on North Korea, maybe things will work out, and maybe they won’t - only time will tell....But the work I am doing now should have been done a long time ago!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 22, 2018

Posted on this the other day: it IS a shell game and it IS delay, delay, delay to buy time to rebuild their nuclear program. They've destroyed through collapse, radiation or both their existing test sites and many of their nuclear scientists have died as a result.

All the Nork's are doing is attempting to buy time. Period. We've been down this road with the Nork's before under Clinton, GW Bush and Obama. All three of which were suckered into paying the Nork's off with money and food to "stop" their nuclear program and the Nork's never stopped. They just got better at hiding it.

FINALLY!!! Someone on FR gets the reality of the situation and helps knock of this juvenile, uninformed, naive “Trump’s heading for a Nobel Prize!! Get out the champagne!! Anyone who doesn’t think so is a lib” -type surrealistic funk over the last 48 hours.

Well here is the deal.

You can either try this process, or go into a full-on war.

Be all pissed off about that talk all you want, but people are not interested in Americans going into another conflict if it can be avoided. War isnt entertainment, which is the attitude of too many juvenile keyboard commanders on this site.

Like Regan said:

“Trust, but verify”.

“But they are going to use this time to build up their nukes!!!!!!!”

And what? People think we wont know if they were?

The Trib’s message is really that they don’t want us to try because they couldn’t stand the thought of another Trump success.

Well, that’s one way of putting it.

I’d tend to disagree though.

He’s doing this only to lessen the sanctions—nothing more—and even get stuff.. Keep them up and he will eventually collapse. Then, and only then might we have true, verifiable and inalterable disarmament.

Trump already said if the talks are not fruitful, he will politely walk out. Nuff said...

Of course, the entire world is skeptical...and that includes Kim.

Proper position, I expect N. Korea is doing the same. But I really believe this is more of a Communist China chess move. They don’t like American nukes so close to their boards as they are preparing for war in the South China sea. They are all ready claiming more territory by building islands and lying about familiarizing them!

They didn’t have to hide it with Clowntoon, they never checked.

Even if the negotiations result in denuclearization of North Korea is successful, what quid quo pro will China demand?
