EU and Mexico agree new free trade pact

The European Union and Mexico reached an agreement on Saturday on a new free trade deal, a coup for both parties in the face of increased protectionism from the United States under President Donald Trump.

Since its plans for a trade alliance with the United States were frozen after Trump’s election victory, the EU has focused instead on trying to champion open markets and seal accords with other like-minded countries.

The agreement in principle with Mexico follows a deal struck last year with Japan and comes ahead of talks next week with the Mercosur bloc of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

“With this agreement, Mexico joins Canada, Japan and Singapore in the growing list of partners willing to work with the EU in defending open, fair and rules-based trade,” said European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Mexico is on the verge of electing a die-hard leftist like Hugo Chavez. He has a 20+ point lead. If this clown gets elected, Mexico will become Venezuela overnight.

Totally agree.
We produce (or have the ability)
the best products in the world.
Textiles, food, rubber, glass,
plastic, oil/gas, etc. I believe we
trade goods and services to bring
other countries UP to our standards.
I say we stop this crap and let them struggle to keep up.
We’re completely capable of
making our own little umbrellas
to put in our mai tai glasses.

“...open, fair and rules-based trade”

The problem with this rules-based trade, is that it is never open and fair. One side will have the advantage over the other.

When it comes to NAFTA and China, we buy everything from them and they buy nothing from us. That is what they call “free trade”.

Thanks Berlin_Freeper. I hope Mexico enjoys being unable to ship beef or autos to Europe. Probably only want 'em for their oil. Meanwhile, Mexico can't survive without the US, but the US can survive and thrive without Mexico.
