Central Berlin evacuated for World War II bomb removal

Authorities in Berlin on Friday successfully defused a 500-kilogram (1,102-pound) British World War II aerial bomb that was found during construction work on Wednesday.

Evacuations of all buildings within 800 meters of the bomb site started from 9 a.m. to allow the defusal to take place. Berlin's main train station fell within the evacuation area, potentially causing disruption for thousands of passengers.

There was something of a holiday atmosphere around the station on Friday morning, as the last few passengers moving out of the station were easily outnumbered by the reporters and TV crews there to interview them, and, unusually, few people seemed to have complained about the organization provided by Germany's rail operator Deutsche Bahn (DB).

Immediately after the bomb was defused, authorities lifted all barriers around the site

Sounds like a Hillary rally, a handful of wacko supporters and an army of sycophantic journalists.

Carpet bombing, the gift that keeps on giving. There’s no telling just how much unexploded ordnance from WWII is still littered all across Europe.

They still find lots of UXO from the war before that in France and Belgium. Farmers plow up HE and gas shells all the time and leave them by the roadside for the government to collect.

Hell, WWII mines are still, occasionally, taking out ships across the globe. There are like 20-30 modern ships since the 1960s missing with all hands across the globe with no known cause of disappearance. Mines suspected or hull breakup in rough seas due to wartime construction.

Not uncommon in Germany still. When I was an exchange student in Freiburg Im Breisgau in the 90s they had to section off several blocks because they had just found an unexploded American bomb from the air raid that smashed half the city in 1944.

I was stationed in West Berlin in the 60's. There was a lot of post war reconstruction activity. Many, many pieces of unexploded ordnance were found each week. They had mass detonations of them in a nearby forest every weekend as I recall. We grew somewhat used to them but it conjured up what it must have been like living through the air raids. Pretty terrifying stuff.

Used to see signs like this fairly regularly.

I remember finding a ‘live one’ when I was a kid in Okinawa. This was in the mid sixties, when these things were turning ip all the time.

Some of the most dangerous uxo I ever worked on was old live cannon balls people were using as door stops in they’re homes. Lots of stuff on sites of old battlefields all over the world still waiting to kill.

Ones that I really didn’t care for were common and simple .......dynamite in really old cemeteries the grave diggers would use to bust up the frozen ground in the winters ...... with a modern use of a backhoe to dig the graves, the dynamite was just left in the corner of the shed. Over the years the nitroglycerin would weep out and crystalize. Try an move that and the grave diggers would wake the dead......
