Cuba's Raúl Castro hands over power to Miguel Díaz-Canel

Miguel Díaz-Canel has been sworn in as Cuba's new president, replacing Raúl Castro who took over from his ailing brother Fidel in 2006.

It is the first time since the revolution in 1959 that a Castro is not at the helm of the government.

Mr Díaz-Canel had been serving as first vice-president for the past five years.

Even though Mr Díaz-Canel was born after the revolution, he is a staunch ally of Raúl Castro and is not expected to make any radical changes.

'The Revolution continues its course'

He was elected by the members of the National Assembly, all 605 of whom were voted in in March after standing unopposed.

Mr Castro is expected to continue wielding considerable political influence in his role as the leader of Cuba's ruling Communist Party.

Quite a paunch on that guy.

Most Cubans these days are as skinny as a rail.

It will be interesting to see if people are going to test this guy to see how far they can go.

With the Castros, at least there was a bit of the Cult of Personality. Will this guy be able to maintain it?

Just look what happened to Yugoslavia after Tito died.

RE: Just look what happened to Yugoslavia after Tito died.

It split up into Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia.

How are they going to split up Cuba?

I would also make the case that after Mao died, they went with a reformer who went away from Mao’s policies.

So the way I see it, Diaz-Canel is going to either have to impose his own “Cult of Personality” or drastically reform, or else he’ll be swept from power. He simply can’t continue the status quo.

Why wasn’t he the next Castro in line of succession?

What a shame. We should send them Julian and/or Joaquin Castro to keep up the tradition.

RE: I would also make the case that after Mao died, they went with a reformer who went away from Mao’s policies.

If I remember correctly, the Communist Party chose Hua Guo Feng to be Mao’s successor. The man was such a non-entity that he faded into obscurity. It was Deng Xiao Ping who finally took over and turned China’s economic and foreign policy around ( but not before a huge internal struggle with the Gang of Four ).

When Hua Guo Feng died in 2008, very few people even noticed.

Yep, totally forgot about him too. Yes my point was that it was Ping who saved the Communists in China.
