The Real Next War in Syria: Iran vs. Israel
New York Times ^ | April 15, 2018 | Thomas L. Friedman

Posted on 04/17/2018 8:11:08 AM PDT by Seizethecarp

Round one occurred on Feb. 10, when an Iranian drone launched by a Revolutionary Guards Quds Force unit operating out of Syria’s T4 air base, east of Homs in central Syria, was shot down with a missile from an Israeli Apache helicopter that was following it after it penetrated Israeli airspace.

“This is the first time we saw Iran do something against Israel — not by proxy,” a senior Israeli military source told me. “This opened a new period.”

It certainly helps to explain why Israeli jets launched a predawn missile raid on the Iranian drone’s T4 home base last Monday. This would have been a huge story — Israel killed seven Iranian Quds Force members, including Col. Mehdi Dehghan, who led the drone unit — but it was largely lost in the global reaction to (and Trump tweets about) President Bashar al-Assad’s use of chemical weapons two days earlier.

“It was the first time we attacked live Iranian targets — both facilities and people,” said the Israeli military source.

“The crimes will not remain unanswered,” Ali Akbar Velayati, a top adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, said during a visit to Syria.

Since then, senior Israeli defense officials have let it be known that if the Iranians were to strike back at Israeli targets, Israel may use the opportunity to make a massive counterstrike on Iran’s entire military infrastructure in Syria, where Iran is attempting to establish both a forward air base, as well as a factory for GPS-guided missiles that could hit targets inside Israel with much greater accuracy — inside a 50-meter radius — and deploy them from Syria and with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

I hate to post something from Friedman, but I find this to be pretty solid reporting on the hot situation that is not getting much coverage at the moment, and a link to a Syria map "used by UN observers" is provided in the article that is very interesting!

Maybe NYT can’t wait, but the Iran-Israel War, at least the one described in Ezekiel 38, won’t be for awhile yet, IMO. I believe that war launches the seven-year tribulation after Jesus comes for his saints, but I think we’re in for one last world-wide Spiritual Awakening before it all that comes down.

We can be certain that Bibi and Trump are on the same page in this one. We can thank Liberals going back to Jimmah Carter, Obama, Hillary, Kerry, et al. for any war in the ME. Zero and his lap dog, Kerry, aided Iran by giving them billions which enabled the Iranians to acquire even more weapons and to suppress and slaughter the Iranian people.

Mindless, gutless, inept, corrosive Liberals always have their fingers in the messes created all over the world especially if they can line their own pockets off the suffering of others.

Whew! I was worried that Iran and Israel might go to war.

But, if Friedman’s saying, it? I KNOW it won’t happen.

Thanks for posting this. As you said, although it is the NYT, the NYT still does produce in-depth, well-written articles like this when they're not lying about Trump and America.

The article gives one reason Iran may not be ready to go toe-to-toe with Israel and that Iran appears to be a paper tiger more like the house of cards the USSR turned out to be:

Iran’s currency is collapsing back home. Consider this April 12 story on CNBC.com: The Iranian rial “has plummeted to a record low amid growing economic and political uncertainty, causing a rush to the banks as Iranians desperately try to acquire U.S. dollars with exchanges forced to shut their doors to prevent long and chaotic lines.” The rial has lost one-third of its value just this year, the story noted.

Been hearing a few fast movers traveling in the east of me at combat speed lately, likely up the Jordan valley towards Syria. But that’s more educated guess than anything.

Blame idiot Carter and idiot Zbigniew Brzezinski for modern Islamic fundamentalism. They enabled it in Iran/ Ayatollah Khomeini going to be better than the secular oriented Shah/ was this craziness or not!!

And then the Sunnis in Saudi Arabia went fundamentalist to counteract the Shiite fundamentalists of Iran, and for bragging rights in the benighted Muslim world aka the alleged Dar al Islam

Zbigniew Brzezinski was a fairly decent foreign policy advisor and expert except when it came to Islam
