For me it goes beyond this. This is civil war. We should not be involved unless Assad attacks outside his country’s borders.
But I suspect we and the Russians are intertwined in this thing much as the US was stuck in Vietnam. That is, it is not about Assad at all. It is about the winning superpower gaining great political strength and influence in the area. Syria is just the real estate on which that battle is being fought.
And we need to get out.

One thing about the old KGB was that it worked to ‘keep ahead of the curve.’ I remember all of the news stories that were “broken” in various India newspapers. Nearly all of them were eventually traced to the Soviets, for example the AIDS stories about being us biological warfare. AIDS began in the USSR when their advisers to the Cuban Army in the Congo and other pro-Soviet African nations came home with it and it began to spread through the USSR.
Pretty impressive to me.

Unless of course you know Assad is about to use chemical weapons to root out a final besieged rebel enclave and conventional bombs just haven’t been working, so you get ahead of the propaganda/damage control. Even if you didn’t think the US or international community would respond, you’d still want to set the narrative that Assad didn’t do it.
The conspiracy can work in both direction.
The real substitute for (potentially) fake news is intelligence on the ground. I don’t know about you but I don’t it.
