Trump's company asked Panama president to help with hotel fight
NBC "News" ^ | April 10, 2018 | by Associated Press

PANAMA CITY - President Donald Trump's company appealed directly to Panama's president to intervene in its fight over control of a luxury hotel, even invoking a treaty between the two countries, in what ethics experts say was a blatant mingling of Trump's business and government interests.

That appeal in a letter last month from lawyers for the Trump Organization to Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela was apparently unsuccessful - an arbitrator declined to reinstate the Trump management team to the waterfront hotel in Panama City. But it provides hard proof of exactly the kind of conflict experts feared when Trump refused to divest from a sprawling empire that includes hotels, golf courses, licensing deals and other interests in more than 20 countries.

While never mentioning Trump or his role as president, the letter says lawyers representing the Trump Organization were aware of "the separation of powers" in Panama but essentially asks the country's president to intervene in the judicial process anyway. It goes on to say that the eviction violates an investment treaty signed by the two countries and suggests that the Panamanian government, not the hotel's new management team, could be blamed for any wrongdoing.

The Deep State and their media enablers are out to destroy our constitutionally elected President, his family, business interests, and associates.

YAWN , Bill Clinton was the advance party for Hillary to set up the amount of money the US would give away and the donations the Clinton Foundation would get in kickbacks

Did our Founders envision government being run solely by professional politicians, ie, no business owners allowed in office?

Wow, they need to dig into the CIA files and see how many HUNDREDS of times, the Government of the USA intervened, interferred and ruined the autonomous governments of Central America. Whatever ever Trump did, it was peanuts to what goes on in these countries. WE are REALLY on a Witch Hunt. Really wish reporters would report on REAL news. Check Hillarys emails of TODAY to George Soros...

The big one was Mossadeqh in Iran, if we hadn't done that, Iran wouldn't be the evil place it is today.

Non issue. 1 Trump is not directing his own company and 2. Lobbying is not illegal.

That is the key quote. Nothing here.

Exactly. But a hasty reading comes away with the impression that President Trump asked the President of Panama to do a favor for him, personally.

It was done deliberately to give that impression to many.

Well, at least Trump didn’t give away the Panama Canal.

Carter did that, thus proving that a President can harm US strategic, economic and security interests, even with no potentially conflicting foriegn business interests at all. (Wait, did Carter sell peanuts in Panama?).

...and at least Trump didn’t get our ambassador and 5 others killed in Ben Ghazi just to cover up a foriegn policy embarrassment weeks prior to his reelection.

Obama did that, thus proving that a President can harm US strategic, economic and security interests, even with no potentially conflicting foriegn business interests at all. (Wait, did Obama sell his books in Libya?).

...and at least Trump didn’t let his SoS get rich selling state secrets and strategic assets to the highest bidder while still in office.

Obama and the Clintons did that, thus proving that a President, SoS and ex president can harm US strategic, economic and security interests, even with no potentially conflicting foriegn business interests at all. (Wait, did Clinton sell Uranium or just give it away?).

It’s amazing how the NYT and Washington Post can never think of any scandals to write about while Democrats are in office.

The disagreement precedes Trump getting elected. The legal argument does not sound very different than any American real estate management company would make. We do have a treaty with Panama regarding contracts and any could lawyer would bring that up. Treaties, even here in the U.S., are often considered as much “basic” law as the Constitution, and all the legal priority that goes with it.

more Fake news.

If Trump did nothing he effectively recused himself.
Even iF Trump did something - if he did it within the law - he still did it legally and ethically.

The article is misleading. Trump exercises no control over the Trump Org, Trump Jr has taken the helm. The fact that Trump Jr's father is president, has no relation to this story of a hostile takeover and anything that may arise from that, including evoking treaties to protect American business interests.

If the press were honest, they'd make that distinction but they aren't so they won't. And that is why we come to FR instead :)

The biggest joke in the whole article was the term “ethics experts”. We’ve seen how those experts in Obama’s admin saw nothing wrong with anything while under Trump, everything is an ethics violation. Ethics to these experts are what they agree with politically — another area that the Dems have destroyed.

That is a common belief but wrong. Western-style democracy has broad appeal but only a few societies in the world are readily capable of it. And, as to those countries that aim at becoming democracies, they usually require outside support to become rooted and to survive existential crises.

As for US support for the overthrow of Mossadeqh, it, like most of America's foreign interventions after WW II, was driven by fear of Soviet communist expansionism. Moreover, while the coup against Mossadeqh had covert US and British assistance, it was spurred and carried out by Iranian nationalists who -- like US and British country experts -- regarded Mossadeqh as an erratic kook and a national menace in light of the potent Communist movement poised to assume power when the Mossadeqh regime collapsed due to its gross misgovernment of Iran.

Thus, absent the coup against Mossadeqh and firm Western support for the Shah, Iran was likely to become a Soviet satellite. As it was, for the next two decades under the Shah, Iran prospered and Westernized. The Shah's eventual overthrow fits a familiar pattern of a restive populace overthrowing a corrupt and out of touch monarch or dictator.
