Ambitious California bill would put the state in charge of prices in the healthcare market (tr)

In one of the most aggressive efforts in the nation to curb soaring healthcare spending, a new California measure would put the state in charge of setting prices for hospital stays, doctor's visits and most other medical services covered by commercial insurers.

The bill, backed by labor unions and consumer groups, is certain to rouse fierce opposition from physicians and hospitals, setting the stage for a brawl between some of the Capitol's top lobbying heavyweights. Proponents also face friction on the left from advocates of single-payer healthcare, who espouse an alternate vision of how to overhaul the state's healthcare.

Despite the political hurdles, an effort to rein in prices is tantalizing for policymakers, as healthcare costs gobble up more of state budgets, employers' bottom lines and workers' paychecks.

"It's quite bold," said Kristof Stremikis, director of market analysis with the nonprofit California Health Care Foundation. "I'm not surprised that a proposal like this has been put forward. I don't think many people would disagree with the assertion that healthcare costs in the state are far too high."

My favorite Ayn Rand book is WE THE LIVING.... And the movie that goes with it is great, too. But the movie leave out a lot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFUu2GbkbSc It is in Italian, IO PARLO ITALIANO, but if you don’t speak Italian, read the closed captions. Be sure you get a version with those. Io sono Italiano, Italiano vero!

They'll just relax the licensing requirements so anyone can do it.

Unless you live under these fools.

I still can’t help but chuckle a bit at the things they decide to address rather than what their main tasks should be.

We’re running out of water in the state, and the state leadership hasn’t lifted a finger to encourage private enterprise to develop desalinization plants.

Where’s the plan for major problems facing California?

Instead they run interference for illegal aliens and dabble in nonsense legislation run amuck.

This article reads, from start to finish, like this ha never been tried in the history of the world. It has. Many times. It has failed miserably every single time.

I moved from maryland (THE Freak state) after 30+ years there doing the best I could to fight the LIB lunatics. It was hopeless. Moving sometimes is best so as to let them rot in their own mess.

Gee. Why didn’t anyone else think of this before??? Just put the state in charge of prices, have the state mandate low prices, and everything is solved!!!!! Everyone will be able to afford healthcare!!!

Thanks for the links. I’ve read the book many times, but I just now noticed that the Directive was issued on May 1, 2019.

BTW - it appears that the full movie (’We the Living’) is available: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwWFsQOpGck

Thanks again!

“Are they going to outlaw trial lawyers, too?”

Ooooh, one HUGE part of high prices, along with fraud and waste.

And I bet not a word about the high cost of turning a blind eye to and often supporting illegal immigrants. Especially when it comes to providing medical care.

The thread a couple of days ago about U-Haul prices skyrocketing on One-Way rentals OUT of Calif. Stand by for even higher prices.

IF I still lived & worked in Calif & they told me how much I could charge for my services, my house would have been up for sale in about 20 minutes.

I left in Dec 2004. WILL NEVER GO BACK.

The thing for them to do now is to elect for moonbeam’s replacement an experienced Moslem governor like the mayor from Londonstan that has experience with socialized medicine (and who knows how to drum up more business for that healthcare industry :)

Californians brag about the sunshine and good weather they have year-round, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I’d rather stay in the Northwoods here in WI with plenty of fish, game, and armed neighbors than to stay in CA.

I don’t dispute your thoughts on that, but it seems to me like many of my fellow patriots fled the state essentially gifting it to the Leftists in full.

There are times when it seems to me we have surrendered rather than decided to flood the state with our kind of people and right this ship of state.

I know the tax situation and COL is prohibitive here. I do understand why folks leave. It’s just that it won’t get better until we devise a plan and retake our worst states.

California is too great a place to just turn over the Leftists.

It’s a strategic state.
