Iowa advances bill to crack down on sanctuary cities

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa is set to become the latest Republican-led state to target so-called sanctuary cities by withholding money from local governments that don’t comply with federal immigration laws, even though the plan could lead to court challenges.

A bill outlining an expansive immigration enforcement plan is expected to receive final legislative approval this week. It comes as President Donald Trump ramps up calls for more stringent immigration enforcement.

Critics say it would essentially allow racial profiling, but Republican lawmakers frame the measure as a public safety policy. Republican Rep. Steven Holt of Denison, a western Iowa community with a growing Latino population, said the bill focuses on immigrants living in the U.S. without legal permission who are suspected of crimes.

“This legislation is about the rule of law, and the safety of all people, citizens and immigrants alike,” Holt said shortly before the Iowa House approved the bill Tuesday on a 55-45 vote, with one Democrat voting for it and five Republicans against it.

The legislation was being debated in the Republican-controlled Senate late Wednesday. Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds has indicated she would sign the measure, highlighting it in a fundraising email for her gubernatorial campaign.

Immigration activist Berenice Nava said she believes immigrants will be racially profiled even if the bill specifically prohibits it. She noted the bill would allow authorities to question people about their immigration status if they’re “under lawful detention or under arrest.”

Only because of some gutsy Republicans in Des Moines in a swing state. I wondered where that could be? ICE picked up an illegal in Bettendorf on a building site last week.

I guess the main culprit is Iowa City.

I see five Pubs deserted the party, turncoats.

Will there be enough Pubs in the Senate to pass it, I see there are 28Rs to 20Ds?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Illegal aliens are NOT immigrants.
People in the US without permission are illegal aliens.
It is not necessary to wait until illegal aliens harm or kill someone to remove them.
ALL illegal aliens are subject to removal.
It would protect the citizens better to remove them before they commit further crimes.
I guess the main culprit is Iowa City.
Iowa City is to IOWA what Madison is to WISCONSIN.
BOTH are LIBERAL bastions.
Yeah this is rough and reason for pessimism. I didn't read the details of Trump wanting the nuclear option. And all those Pubs retiring from the House.
At least some come/stay on board for certain issues who felt burned by Trump in some way for either the good of the country or their chances of being re-elected.
McCain is the worst traitor imo. And he has a history of turning when there was no personal vendetta. Most of the others are in a shaky position in their districts as to re-election.
Des Moines probably isn't far behind. Quad City area iffy. Sioux City, guess I don't have a good feel for it around the state. I can understand why Grassley and Ernst are concerned for agricultural interests so I hope this Mexican mess and China tariff matter shake out in our favor.
To make beneficial changes sometimes require heavy risks which wouldn't have been so risky if those who went before in both parties hadn't sold us down the river in so many ways.
Yup... It took years for even Hannity to switch from “undocumented immigrant” to “illegal alien.” Words have meaning.
