EPA poised to announce rejection of Obama vehicle fuel efficiency rules

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to use a Virginia car dealership on Tuesday as the setting to tout its rejection of the Obama administration’s landmark vehicle fuel efficiency rules, a move that could put automakers in the middle of a battle between the Trump administration and California.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt plans to sign a declaration by Sunday that the Obama administration’s vehicle efficiency rules for 2022 through 2025 are “not appropriate” and must be revised, Reuters reported last week.

Pruitt is expected to speak at an event at a Chevrolet dealership in suburban Washington and will joined by groups representing dealers and automakers, according to people familiar with the plans.

The state of California, which has the power to effectively create its own fuel economy standards, several allied states and environmental groups are gearing up for a legal and political fight over the rules, aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions from new cars and trucks.

Doesn’t look like a very SMART car to me. Looks like someone was trying to recreate the end of the chase scene from the 7 Ups.

Does that mean they’ll stop building cars that shut off at every stoplight?

I passed a “Smart” car on the freeway yesterday. I felt bad for the true believer strapped in that little death machine among tons of larger cars and trucks. I couldn’t imagine being safe in the least in that thing.

It's worth noting that the Obama mandated corporate AVERAGE fuel economy requirement for 2024 is over 50 miles per gallon. This means that EVERY SINGLE vehicle sold by Toyota, Ford, BMW, etc., must produce an average fuel economy this high. For every vehicle getting "only" 50 mpg, an offsetting vehicle getting 60 mpg must be sold. These vehicles are on the drawing boards TODAY. Yet, there's not even a single vehicle today that meets that standard, much less a corporate average (short of electric vehicles, which only meet the standard because the CO2 produced from generating electricity is not included in the measurement).

BILLIONS of dollars are being wasted as I write this designing absurd vehicles that no one really wants to drive, but must be sold if this standard were to become law. Kudos to Trump for killing it now.

The state of California, which has the power to effectively create its own fuel economy standards ...

So large is CA that a standard created there forces manufactures to build to that standard lest they lose the economies of scale ... which means that if CA decides to go all electric so will everyone else that buys a new car.

And then many wonder how and why the average cost of a light vehicle is now a whopping $36,270! This is as of January 2018 and according to Kelly Blue Book. Moreover, it is becoming increasingly common to finance a vehicle for 84 or more months (7+ years). A lot of that cost can be directly tied to government mandates and ALGores climate scheme.

It’s not a Smart car.

It’s a small SUV (looks like a KIA Sportage) Not the the rear mounted tire on a swing-arm do-hickey. The tires/wheels are MUCH larger than the donuts affixed to Smart cars.

There would be NO sign of a Smart car in this accident...

“9’th circuit over rule within days.”

And with the death yesterday of that cretin leftist judge, Stephen Reinhardt, that makes seven, SEVEN vacancies on the 9th Circuit. This is ALL thanks to Bitch McConnell, Thanks for nothing you buttheads in Kentucky, now go use your outdoor toilets and think about what you’ve done to your country!

These were the standards Obongo tossed in on his way out the door. Outrages and impossible to achieve without forcing everyone into golf carts. Pure fascism, using the environment to control the market and production. You will not find a better example of how the BS climate movement can be used to control the masses.

Fuel efficiency measures should be removed from the EPA.

If anyone in the federal government need be concerned with fuel efficiency it should be within the department of energy. If the country continues to have a “CAFE” standard, it should be based on practical science - what’s possible at what cost - not EPA political demands.

Buying a car because it is rated more fuel efficient should be a customer’s choice, not a political demand.

California has not built a new power plant in a very long time & they closed their nuclear power source a few years back.

They get a massive amount of their power rom outside the state.

Since here has to be POWER for electric vehicles, when those states CUT OFF power to Calif because they are ‘using more than their fair share’ that state will grind to a halt.

Couldn’t happen to better group of politicians.

Yep - let Kalifornia relegate it’s people to motorized skateboards - some mopeds don’t get that kind of mileage...
