Senior White House adviser and first family member Ivanka Trump is scheduled to meet South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha when she visits the U.S. following Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's abrupt Trump administration ouster.

The personnel changes for this meeting come after Ivanka Trump attended the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic games in February. Kang Kyung-wha and President Trump's eldest daughter were photographed together at the games while observing the competition and snapping photos with athletes.

I really hope Ivanka isn't meeting with her instead of people from the State Department or Pompeo.

There’s nothing wrong with Ivanka being around for some ceremonial aspects of the visit. And I am long over the idea that only the State Department can properly represent and protect U.S. interests. That’s a pipe dream, and any thinking that this is the case just shows an ignorance of history.

Yes, actually there is. Just the optics, let alone the potential for longer-term business gains from promoting Jivanka with world leaders like this:

I’m starting to get the idea that this whole mater is not to be taken seriously.

WHAT?!!! the State Department is the ONLY entity with the ability to represent the U.S. and its interests! They have kept us out of wars, kept our balance of trade favorable, eliminated outside meddling in elections (ours and otherwise), stopped the proliferation of naughty weapons of mass and not-so-mass destruction, promoted healthy lifestyles and traditional morality around the globe, stamped out poverty and disease, and generally acted as indispensable, almost olympian savants despite being saddled with citizens who are ignorant, deplorable, provincial schlubs...who are ungrateful to boot.

This kind of diplomacy requires the intellect, altruism, charisma, and - dare I add - style of a Hillary Rodham Clinton or John Forbes Kerry... not an Ivanka Trump.

Worst idea ever. Ivanka needs to stay away from what could be one of the most important foreign policy negotiations this country has ever had, with dire consequences for the entire planet if things don't work out.
Why does she keep bulldozing her way into stuff that she has no idea about?

“And I am long over the idea that only the State Department can properly represent and protect U.S. interests”. Good, glad you’re over it. Actually, the U.S. has a long history, going back to the very beginning of the country, of using back channel civilian or unofficial intermederies to communicate with foreign governments. Nothing wrong with it. As I understand it Ivanka is very intelligent and a serious person. She can’t help it that she’s a looker.... 😉

Because her father wants her to. If he did not approve, he would do something about it.

Ceremonial aspects? No. But she has no place being involved in serious policy decisions.

I favor Ivanka for this mission. She can do better than the so called old-pros in the State Department. Most of whom are lefties anyway. Let’s give Ivanka a shot. In both Koreas she is seen as an important personal representative of Donald Trump. Yes, just because she is his daughter. So what.

I am the opposite of upset over this. So what if I hear the gnashing of teeth and dentures at State. Rex Tillerson was probably against such Ivanka diplomacy.

So we should leave “serious policy decisions” entirely up to the striped-pants boys in Foggy Bottom? Is that what you imply?

At least Ivanka won’t be asking for donations to a phony foundation if they do meet.

Absolutely! ONLY the stripe-pants (and the shinier the better) boys/girls at Foggy Bottom are competent to handle this and all other serious policy decisions! No other group of humans can possibly do better, as the state department has always been populated with our most brilliant and selfless public servants... the upper echelons being particularly gifted and honorable during the Clinton and Obama administrations.

For example: Hillary Rodham Clinton was willing to devote one of the greatest foreign policy minds of the last 10,000 years to solving the dilemma of a Libya ruled by a wealthy man who was insufficiently pro-Muslim Brotherhood. After the world was made more wholesome and sweeter by redistributing Ghaddafi's gold and allowing radical islamists equal access to sophisticated weapons, she self-deprecatingly chuckled while quoting the great Julius Caesar...himself another notably generous and self-effacing humanitarian. And it doesn't hurt that she has great legs. Additionally...

Oh, hell... that last one broke my bullsh*t generator, and just as I was warming up.

No, I was being sarcastic about State. I see no way in hell that Ivanka Trump - deliberately or inadvertently - could do any worse job than the festival of mediocrities that paraded across the Obama foreign policy horror show, and if she is going at the behest of the President, she will do a lot better than any remaining deep staters at FB.

You anti-Trump types wouldn’t like anything Trump does, so just STFU already.

Huh? How did you come up with that? Actually, quite the contrary....

No, when it looks like something stupid is being done I'll continue to speak up. I suspect I'll be spending a lot of time responding you your posts then.

I would say leave it up to those who know what they're doing, be it State Department or other. I have a hard time believing that Ivanka Trump is the best the administration has to offer in the diplomacy area. Unless, of course, the intent is to insult South Korea. Then it might work.
