Fissures in the Democratic Party will play out in Tuesdays primary in this Chicago suburb where seven-term Rep. Dan Lipinski is facing a primary challenger backed by liberal activists and prominent lawmakers from his own party.
Mr. Lipinski, who has the support of numerous labor unions and local mayors, is highlighting his constituent services, including projects he has pushed through Congress to improve commutes to Chicago. But his opposition to abortion rights and his vote against the Affordable Care Act has run afoul of liberals, and his opponent in the primary, Marie Newman, has won the backing of national groups like the Human Rights Campaign and Emilys List and fellow Reps. Jan Schakowsky and Luis Gutierrez, who represent nearby districts.
Its a safe Democratic district where theres a real choice this time among the two candidates, Ms. Schakowsky said.
This is a test of whether we have a big tent or if the tent is narrowing on us, said Wisconsin Rep. Ron Kind, who represents a district that President Donald Trump won by 4.5 points.

And Chicago, driving the rest of the state, with no options other than Democrats because to be anything other would get you run out of town... or worse.
As much as I would want to cast a ballot for Jeanne Ives in the gubernatorial prinary were I an IL resident, I would vote in the Democrat primary if I lived in IL-03. Dan Lipinski is a breath of fresh air in a House Democrat caucus with only one other true pro-lifer (Collin Peterson of MN-07) and just three others who ever cast pro-life votes (Henry Cuellar of TX-28, who votes pro-life around half the time, and Jim Langevin of RI-02 and Marcy Kaptur of OH-09, both of whom used to be pro-life but now only occasionally vote the right way), and I would hate to see him replaced by a pro-abortion Marxist (particularly given that the GOP nomination in that district will go to the only person running in the GOP primary, a literal Nazi who is no more Republican than Bernie Sanders).
This masthead editorial by National Review is 100% spot-on. Vote for the conservative Ives over the RINO Rauner (who cant even claim that hes more electable anymore) in the GOP gubernatorial primary, unless you live in IL-03, in which case your vote would be more useful being cast in the Democrat primary for Congressman Lipinski (and, if I may add, for the weakest Democrat gubernatorial candidate among the frontrunners, so as to increase Ivess odds of winning the general): https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/03/jeanne-ives-illinois-governor-endorsement-rauner-forfeited-conservative-support/
I once had a guy ask me about politics, and I told him I was pretty conservative so I tend to vote for Republicans. He told me that because I was conservative didnt mean I couldnt vote for democrats. I immediately burst out laughing.
As I said before I’m glad I don’t live in CD-3 this year (that’s a change!).
So many rat races, very tempting even for those of us outside the 3rd. The biggie is Cook County Board President, Toni “I don’t want Impy to be able to afford pop because I’m a black-hearted Hagraven’ Prickwankle vs. Former Alderman and Chi Mayoral Candidate Bob Fioretti, who I wish would have run as an Independent. I wish we could have the old Cali-style “blanket” primary.
BTW who would you say is the weakest rat Guv candidate (if you’ve been following them)?
Fattiy Arbuckle is a walking scandal, Kennedy is the worst politician in his family, but I’d have to go with progtard Daniel Biss (one good thing about him, he sponsored pension reform but is now apologizing for it).
It’s a sad day when you pray a Kennedy (who’ve I’m been dreading running for years) or a faggy sounding progtard wins but Fatty is just the pits.
Downstate will only be about 20% of the rat primary vote but it should put Fatty on top (as it did Blago in 2002,he took 93 counties in the primary, that’s 2 more than Trump took against Shillery), he’s bribed all the county party organizations and has full machine backing. A pity we don’t have runoffs.
Lipinksi Jr. is more conservative than every other Chicago area democrat and one of their only pro-lifers in Congress but that doesn’t make him a conservative.
He’s a moderate. If rats were wise they’d make room for his ilk.
Naturally there is no place for actual conservatives in the rat party, that wouldn’t make any sense, they’re the leftist party, no conservative in their right mind wants a thing to do with them. The silly days of party affiliation not being based on ideology are over.
Yeah, just cause you’re heterosexual doesn’t mean you can’t play patty cake with Richard Simmons, amirite? ;p
Something like that. Gag!
Impy, if you want Illinois to change their primary system, please write to some state legislators and ask them to change it. In Feb. 2002, I heard a radio talk show host, Joe Gentile, say, “I want to vote for John Cox, for the U.S. Senate, and Paul Vallas, for governor, but I can’t do that because Illinois has a stupid primary that forces people to choose a party, for a primary.”
Lipinski is no conservative. His district covers one of the most Catholic areas in the Chicagoland. Lots of Eastern European folks there. Most people dont know but there are more Polish people in Chicago than there are in Krakow.
He panders to the Catholic base every two years. Then votes almost in lockstep with Pelosi.
Shed no tears for him.

See post 10.

The system I described, used at the time in California, was ruled to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2000.

I actually am forced to agree with the decision on legal grounds, and it would be horrible for conservatives if Republican states had such a system, but that doesn’t stop me from wishing I could have my cake and eat it too.
I’d certainly prefer to be repped by him than any other IL rat, let alone Newman, he votes the right way on occasion (but still less often than the worst RINOs).
But in the words of Ivan Drago, if he dies, he dies. In the grand scheme it may be best for us if the rat party makes clear it has no place for anyone who isn’t a doctrinaire Stalinist.
Another issue is that his district is a tantalizing target, a strong Republican could beat possibly Newman in 2020 (or possibly not, it may be out of range). In a safer rat seat rooting for him would be a clearer choice.
