Yale President Tries To Reassure Skeptical Public

The president of Yale is trying to assuage a public that is increasingly skeptical of the value of a college education today. "If we can first empathize with their concerns, rather than dismiss them as ill-founded or anti-intellectual, we will be better able to regain their trust," Peter Salovey said in remarks delivered at the Higher Education Leadership at Yale in January and excerpted in the Chronicle of Higher Education in March.

To this end, he offered a string of assertions and three concrete facts, which were:

• "A recent Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found that the drop in confidence in higher education was due 'almost entirely to growing skepticism among Americans without four-year degrees.'"

• "In 2012 the median annual earnings for those with a bachelor’s degree or higher were $45,500, compared to $28,000 for high school graduates."

• "University of California researchers found that for every dollar spent by a university, average incomes within the host city increased by 89 cents. Yale, for example, is the largest employer and a major taxpayer in the city of New Haven, Conn. Our economic impact is an estimated $8.8 billion statewide."

Apparently, it never occurred to him that, even without a four-year degree, Americans skeptical of higher education might be working off of information that is more recent than 2012, six years ago. Moreover, Yale may indeed be the nucleus of New Haven but where does the money come from?

The only purpose of higher education is to gain a skill, cost-effectively, that people will pay you to do.

This from a guy who didn’t discipline a BLM mob who ran through his school library screaming at and harassing white students who were studying there. Put aside the educational issue, I’d be afraid for my kids’ safety if they went to Yale.

So it's the uneducated people, the deplorables, who have this hair-brained idea. Sure.

IOW, shut up and do what your betters tell you to do.

I imagine that since my BA isn't from an Ivy League college he sees me as a high school drop out.

Are you hinting that gender studies doesn’t make the cut?

My first child went to the Navy out of high school, he has a decent job near me at the local VA as a cook, he was trained to be a Submariner cook, does not make all that much money compared to his younger sister.

She graduated 10 years ago with a degree in business emphasis in marketing, from University of Oregon, Lundquist School of Business. Making $105,000 a year at 33 single. She got her foot in the door with her first job, but what she is doing now, Digital Analytics, for a big marketing firm and their client Microsoft, she did not learn in college.

Third child too smart for college dropped out after two years to start his own business being a chimney sweep. He is in a dangerous, hard and dirty job, but seems to like it very much, and is doing better than both his older brother and sister. All three own homes.

Universities often provide worthless degrees and substantial debt.

The value of a college education is based on a simple logical fallacy—https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_hoc_ergo_propter_hoc

The fact that you received a college education and earned more does not prove that the college education caused you to earn more.

Bet they don’t teach that one at Yale!

(Hint: Smart kids tend to go to college because that is expected. If they didn’t go to college they might have high earnings anyway.)

Ben Shapiro loves to use great comedy by using hyperbole to point out the uselessness of “stupid” degrees with the mythical “lesbian dance” degree.

yes he does. The problem is those degrees often turn out to be not so mythical.

States should offer to pay for programming BootCamps for all STEM graduates interested in it. 12-20 weeks VS 4 years seems like a bargain!

"But first, we need to expunge all traces of the white devils from the pages of our history, and reconstruct our society around the values of the BDS movement." Thanks Academiadotorg.

Anyone who wants to spend seventy grand a year so their child can learn there’s 17 genders... or discover how to hate people who believe in God... should have their head examined.

The only reason this sh*t from Yale - Peter Salovey - wants middle class kids coming to his indoctrination center is to keep kids of ‘liberal elites’ puffed up about their FALSE SENSE of superiority.

Don’t waste your money... STOP FEEDING EDUCATION FACTORIES.... don’t sell out your children. Oh and I’m a deplorable with a college degree...

It’s rough accepting the ‘deplorable’ moniker when you realize Hillary’s thugs - those name callers who agree with her - include 90+% of your kids teachers and ‘professors’...
