Dated story from 2010 but the official U.S. International Trade Commission is down, undergoing maintenance. Would have been the best place for tariff data.

No one is expecting “perfect free trade”.

We are expecting FAIR TRADE

I say put the highest tariff on all products coming from any country that they put on any of ours, be that 1% or 1000%.

Anyone who thinks a 600 BILLION deficit is fare trade is living in la, la land.

Prior to 1916 our entire government was funded completely by tariffs.

So 20% is something to be up in the are and harping about but 104% is just peachy.

Go play with the foxes.

There are all sorts of non-tariff barriers to the exports of the US to consider too.

I like the idea of reciprocal. You charge us 10% we charge you 10%, charge 25% we charge you 25%. That is fair trade

Trump is right on tariffs — That’s why he was elected

President Trump is simply doing what he said he would do during the presidential campaign – protecting American workers and safeguarding our national security, all at the same time.

The Trump administration, in fact, has a clear and important goal in mind: to protect U.S. jobs and industries that we must have in this country for vital national security reasons.

First, as Peter Navarro pointed out recently to Fox News, the U.S. aluminum industry is down to less than 10 percent of fulfilling our own domestic demand. Six smelters have stopped production since 2013, leaving our nation with only five remaining.

And only two of those smelters are in actual working order. Our steel industry has shed thousands of jobs for decades, and is under real threat of someday being destroyed in the coming years unless it is protected in some reasonable way.

Second, our nation’s security is at stake if these industries were to disappear. As one senior White House official explained to me just this week, this could be a matter of life or death for our country.

Sugar is criminal. Two families Bribe Congress to maintain their strangle hold. 4000 metric tonne import limit. Good real sugar is non existant. We get what is left from some science experiment.

US Steel refused to upgrade to the latest technology and dug their own grave. They’re going to start up a blast furnace for 500 union jobs? Pitiful.

Freekin start from the top in technology, and try to catch up. Probably too late, but this isn’t about trade, this is about the stupidity of the American steel industry.

“We are expecting FAIR TRADE”

Yeah. I agree and wish Trump would announce it over and over again.

Read after WW II and a bit after WW I we dropped our tariff’s to help other countries heal. Is this “no good deed should go unpunished”?

As far as the Steel Industry... the union was their demise. The stronger unions got the lower productivity went. Grew up there. Family and friends worked there. They knew the industry was going to fail. Saw it first hand.

My Grandfather worked to form the steel workers unions in the 30’s. By the late 70’s he regretted it. He went though the Bolshevik Revolution. He understood the abuse of power later in his life. Helped me to understand it earlier in my life.

Yep. And management refused to accept the new tech oxygen and later electric arc furnaces. They doomed the industry.
