Canadians protest Jewish school buses, defend wearing the color Nazis used to mark Jews

A group of about eight Montreal residents who attended a city meeting wearing small yellow badges in protest of Jewish school buses faced a wave of accusations of anti-Semitism. But their leader, Ginette Chartre, says they will not back down, the Canadian Press reported.

A growing Hasidic community in the Montreal borough of Outremont uses school buses to drop children off around the city, causing tension with neighbors who say the constant bus traffic causes congestion, noise and pollution, reported the Canadian Jewish News.

Chartre and other residents showed up at a public meeting to complain on March 5, wearing small yellow badges on their chests - a display some say evoked Nazi imagery.

Prior to the horrors of the Holocaust, the German government required Jewish people to wear six-pointed yellow badges bearing the word “Jude.” Propaganda leaflets were distributed to German citizens, saying “Whoever bears this sign is an enemy of our people,” according to the Holocaust Memorial Center.

There were many different versions of the badge, which was also required in occupied countries. Some had different spellings of Jude or no word at all - but nearly all were based around a yellow Star of David.

The protesters in Canada say there is no connection between their choice of protest attire and the historic connection between yellow badges and mass persecution of Jewish people.

"neighbors who say the constant bus traffic causes congestion, noise and pollution, reported the Canadian Jewish News."

If the buses were carrying muslims these "neighbors" would be facing criminal "hate speech" charges.

Or if each passenger on the bus would be replaced by a CAR, think how much more congestion, noise and confusion there would be.

The protestors seem to have a bit of a weak case, IMHO.

How many buses? How many times per day do they pass the homes of the offended “neighbors”?

I think the claim that the yellow rectangles represent school buses is disingenuous: they could have cut out a recognizable bus shape in just a few seconds.

Evidently only Jewish school buses cause those problems. All the other buses must be marvels of modern technology.

No one has said what the actual purpose of the badge is, if it’s not a mockery of holocaust victims.

‘Canadians’ or ‘Québécois’?

A name like ‘Ginette Chartre’ suggests the latter. Québécois are amongst the most racist of all people groups.

For some reason, there seems to be an inordinate amount of disdain for Jews among the French-Canadian community. Many, if not most, of the Quebequois I know are very anti-Jew.

I don’t get it...

"I think the claim that the yellow rectangles represent school buses is disingenuous"

I don't know why they don't stand up defiantly and acknowledge it. "Hell yes it's a reference to Nazi Germany, because the Holocaust started with the same anti-Semitic bigotry we are seeing right here."

These are SCHOOL BUSES? Now, we protestors complaining about kids going to SCHOOL? On a SCHOOL BUS? I live on a corner. t least 6 times a day, a school bus goes by. 2 times a day, the bus stops on this corner—before & after school.

My personal dealings with the Quebecois is that they are against anyone who ISN'T Quebecois. And that includes most of their fellow Canadians.

Given my choice of cities to visit for vacation, I think I'd take Baghdad over Montreal these days.

I don’t know that these buses are just being used to transport kids to schools. The article just notes that these Jews are using school buses to transport Jewish people to and from where the need to go. As noted above, this type of mass transportation is more eco-friendly than if each passenger were to use their own automobile or truck to get around.

Montreal is 2.5% Jewish. Anyone complaining about their school buses is actually concerned about something other than traffic.

If it’s anything like the U. S., a mere 8 people can get whatever they want from their government; get a law passed or get changes to existing laws. No problem. The more indecent/decadent, the better!

It wasn't the Jews wearing the yellow rectangles, it was the people protesting the Jewish school buses.

How many buses? How many times per day do they pass the homes of the offended "neighbors"?

"On just one residential, one-way street, there are 14 buses in one hour!” she said. “That’s not reasonable."

Sounds like much ado about nothing ...on both sides.

After all they aren’t making the Hasidic students wear the yellow badges..... so there’s no comparison.

this is some kind of schizoid “reasoning” of a prostest over next to nothing. If each Hasidic kid had a parent with a car or cars.... there would be a whole lot more congestion.

these are french quebecois (dare one say, catholic) bitchers who don’t like the hebrews in their “neighborhood”. Something the US settled long ago peacefully in urban neighborhoods.

How trite and ridiculous this chartre woman is. Now— no complaint if they were kicking out islamos.... which interestingly they are NOT. Just. like. France. C’est la vie.
