Lately I have been hearing that used by many people and I don’t think it has anything to do with gender (at least I believe on the normal people speaking). It’s just poor grammar which is an epidemic.

My impression has always been that this usage of "they" is an early attempt at having a "gender-neutral" singular pronoun that isn't "it."

I find it interesting that the writer refers to the different energy of the male in the women’s bathroom. Evidently, this writer recognizes the different energy of men and women PERIOD.
