The sky-high rent and cost of living that we've come to expect from the Bay Area might have finally taken their toll on a large proportion of residents. A huge wave of people are considering more affordable cities outside of the tech capital of the world, and they're taking their startups — and investors — with them, as Kevin Roose reported in The New York Times.
San Francisco lost more residents than any other city in the country in the last quarter of 2017, according to data from real estate website Redfin, which sampled a million users. The data factored in the number of residents that cities gained, meaning San Francisco lost a net 15,489 residents; about 24% more than the next highest loser on the list, New York City.
This is expected to continue into 2018, considering that as of February 2018, 49% of Bay Area residents were looking to move out of San Francisco, according to a survey by public relations firm Edelman.
If that data isn't enough evidence of a heavy migration, consider the shortage of U-Haul moving vans in the Bay Area, which has inflated costs so much that it costs $2,000 to rent a truck from San Jose to Las Vegas — but only costs $100 the other way around, according to local news reporter Michelle Robertson from SFGate. In fact, it costs twice as much to rent a truck from San Jose to almost any other destination city than to rent the same vehicle in the opposite direction.
The migration away from San Francisco isn't a completely new phenomenon, since rent has been increasing at an incredible rate for years.

But bottom line, I would not live anywhere that is due for a big earthquake, and I believe SF is.

Seriously, I’m here in SoCal looking forward to the big one - if we live through it we could buy a cool place by the ocean. If not, hey.
Well I hope the census reflects it and we lose a rep or two. And I live here!
Then rule out living in Seattle, in and around the Mississippi River region, as well as Los Angeles, Alaska and near Yellowstone National Park. Those areas will experience bigger and more damaging quakes than SF. Even New York gets quakes. SF is prepared and built infrastructure to resist quakes, more so than most cities. My bet is on the Cascade region near Seattle for the next big one, or Yellowstone. If Yellowstone caldera erupts, we're all affected no matter where you live.
I was in Santa Clara for the Loma Prieta quake. I live now in Florida with hurricanes. I was raised in Amarillo with the tornadoes. Quakes are an E-ticket ride that is over in minutes. Tornadoes give you lots of time to worry about them before they strike, and hurricanes keep you on edge for days.

That's an amazing statistic considering most Bay Area residents don't live in San Francisco.
The article is very confusing because it repeatedly conflates “San Francisco” with “the Bay Area”. San Francisco is only about 10 percent of the population of the Bay Area. It is not even the Bay Area’s largest city.
I saw an interview of a woman standing in front of a U-Haul and she said she couldn't the politics and illegals. Then the news caster said people were moving because of cost of living.
Hurricanes give warnings many days before, where they will hit.
Tornadoes give no warning where they will strike, but the forecasters do give warnings where they are likely to occur.
Earth quakes give NO WARNING where or when they will occur.
I lived through TWO hurricanes last year in Florida. We knew exactly when and where they would strike. Orderly evacuation was possible.
I will take hurricanes over quakes and tornadoes.

A 650sqft apartment is $3,500 a month, and it’s another $400 for a parking spot.
