They are probably falling for another Russian disinformation scheme. Foreign intelligence services, just like our own government, troll and try to influence political actions around the world. Remember how top officials in our own government told the UN and media reporters that the attack on our embassy in Libya was due to a movie?
In this case, the New York Times, and probably even FBI "investigators" are being fed whatever some Russian intelligence officers want the escort to say. The Russian embassy in Thailand probably already met with her, and she may well be an asset for them.
If she even has tapes they were probably made by the FSB.

In Thailand prostitution is illegal. They don’t ever arrest anyone for it, unless you’re a farang.

The NYT can’t even find its a** with its two hands and SOMEHOW they found a hooker in prison in Thailand has information about Russia involvement?
That was my first response.
I watched the video. The NYT doesn't see fit to mention it, but in the video the Russians place blame on neocon Victoria Nuland for the terrible relations between the USA and Russia and note that she has a personal animus towards Russia that has an affect on our international relations.
But it doesn't take a Russian oligarch to notice that the neocons have a particular animus to Russia that they don't have to, say, China, even though while both countries represent a threat to our interests, China is by far the bigger concern. I also find it odd how unconcerned the neocons seem to be about North Korea which is building thermonuclear weapons and ICBMs targeted squarely at us.
