I remember well XTRA out of Tijuana - “91X The Future of Rock and Roll”. Mexican based station, so they had no problem cranking above the FCC ceiling of 50,000 watts. They juiced at 100,000 if I recall correctly. You probably had no problem picking them up on Hainan Island.

Reminds me of a wild weekend at the 91X surf competition in Ensenada back in `87. The hair on my legs has never grown back!

What about the other one who was simply jailed for robbery? Did that deserve a death sentence? Or the one killed in 2015?

In general, I believe we have a moral obligation both to lock dangerous criminals up for an extremely long time to protect the innocent and to keep those criminals safe once they are locked up with a limited ability to protect themselves. In the case of predators who harm children, and when the courts also fail (this predator was ruled incompetent to stand trial), my feelings become ambivalent.

I'm not saying people like this killer should knock off everyone undesirable behind bars - I don't think that should happen. I am saying it would surprise me if locking the two of them up together was an accident. I assume someone in authority wanted this to happen.

In the early summer of ‘73, I had a great roadrace from Ensenada to the border at San Ysidro. We drove south from San Diego to drop one of my roommate’s younger brother off at the Ensenada harbor to catch a sailboat. It was just after dark when we left and I took the back way north just for the fun of driving my ‘71 BMW 2002 flat out over the back roads. Several miles out in the boonies, I got high beams in my rearview and tried to outrun whatever it was but it kept right on my tail. There was a roadhouse about halfway to the border and we pulled in for some cervezas since it was still hot. Alongside us pulls a silver Pontiac Trans Am with a crewcut blond monster in a three piece pinstriped suit. We shake hands and go into the car for our beers. Turns out the guy is a German visiting LA on business and he rented this Trans Am just for fun. The irony was thick because here were two American longhairs in a masterpiece of German engineering and the German in the suit driving crude but fast American iron. So we agreed to race to the border. I got out in front of him and he was never able to get around me. We were cooking at over 100 on some of the straights. It was great fun and I’m sure you can’t do that anymore.

I assume someone in authority wanted this to happen.

I doubt it since it would have to explain the two prior cellmate murders, which it doesn't.

The guy is just plain crazy.........

You have to admire his determination to get a single room.

‘Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action’

I don’t see a need to explain the first one at all. Prisoners get cellmates. As for the second, that could simply be a failure to recognize that the same person might kill twice. It seems entirely plausible that the third one could be the only conscious plan, without any official effort to trigger the first two.

Excellent story. Running those roads in the dark at those speeds these days may very well find you hitting illegals heading Norte.
