Alabama on Thursday halted the execution of an inmate who had argued that his veins were too damaged for lethal injection, because medical staff did not think they could connect the intravenous line by the time the death warrant expired at midnight.
Alabama Corrections Commissioner Jeff Dunn said the prison system halted Doyle Lee Hamm's execution around 11:30 p.m. "out of an abundance of caution" after medical staff said they did not think they could obtain "the appropriate venous access" before midnight. "It was a time issue," Dunn said. "I wouldn't necessarily characterize what we had tonight as a problem. ... The only indication I have is that in their medical judgment it was more of a time issue given the late hour."

Numerous condemned men have tried to beat down their arm veins before an execution, but I don’t think that has ever worked.
The man in this case apparently had significant vein damage from years of drug abuse.

What the noose? How in the firing squad did that happen? They can’t come up with a non-vein-involved solution? How were they going to anesthetize him for his cancer surgery last December?

I still think self termination should be an option for death row inmates. My friends and I during a night of imbibing adult beverages started talking about the death penalty. We wanted a way where in the eyes of the church, the condemned would be guaranteed a trip to hell. No forgiveness.
We came up with a system that was based on completing a circuit. Within the cell there are two points on the wall and two points on the floor. The condemned would have to put hands and feet on the connections. The fifth connection is for the forehead. Once the forehead makes the connection, a 50 cal bullet is fired into the head. The bullet won’t fire until all 5 connections are made.
Once the prisoner is put on death row, all he sees within his cell is that contraption. Could be days, months or years, but it is there staring him in the face until the day he is taken from his cell and executed by the state.
