U.S. Army awards heroism medals to junior cadets killed in Florida shooting

The U.S. Army is awarding its Medal of Heroism to three Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) cadets killed in last week's school shooting in Parkland, Florida, an Army spokesperson confirmed Tuesday. Alaina Petty, Peter Wang and Martin Duque were all students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where the deadly attack unfolded.

The Army awards the Medal of Heroism to JROTC cadets who perform "acts of heroism."

"The achievement must be an accomplishment so exceptional and outstanding that it clearly sets the individual apart from fellow students or from other persons in similar circumstances," the Army said in a statement. "The performance must have involved the acceptance of danger and extraordinary responsibilities, exemplifying praiseworthy fortitude and courage."

Can we wait until all the dead are buried to stop all this virtue signaling and hysteria?!

It’s a nice gesture but awarding them medals now comes off, and is , a cheap ploy.

Fantastic does not describe any part of the situation yet. In fact it is in very poor taste.

This was the perfect time to award these medals, IMHO. Note that the article is from CBS. So the medals did more than recognize valor. They forced CBS to put at least some of the focus on the heroes.

And you come off sounding ridiculous and petty. No harm in the Army recognizing this kids right now.

Why weren’t they armed?

Because the only “heroes” were the cadets?
No medals for the non-cadets or the gym teacher?

Are the cadets going to get a military funeral too with a 21 gun salute?

We must honor them ALL as the students they were - at least until the dead have been buried and mourned.

Not try to wrest control of the narrative with a feel good and vapid action which only plays into the socialists hands.

Contrast this with the way the Ft. Hood victims were treated. It took until 2015 for the victims to receive Purple Hearts and medical benefits stemming from the 2009 shooting. Largely because Obama deemed it ‘workplace violence’.

Seriously? Follow your logic and realize how illogical it is. So if an active duty military person is killed in a terror attack along with civilians the military can’t honor? What about if a victim was a Boy Scout? The Scouts couldnt honor them? If the NEA wants to honor a teacher that died they can’t? You seem to not grasp the basic principle that these kids were in ROTC, a para military and DoD sponsored organization. The Army can do whatever they want, just as USMA offered an honory acceptance to the class of 2022 to one of the students. Sorry, you still sound petty, shrill and really ridiculous.

Because the other people werent in JR ROTC
And this is an Army JR ROTC member recognition?

D’ oh!

The Wang boy was recognized from the outset as a hero for holding open the door to allow his classmatrs to escape
He has also been awarded posthumous admission to West Point Class of 2025

That coach who shielded students and the student who was shot five times locking the door were also mighty heroic. That student is alive and recovering.

Right you are. I hope that he also receives recognition, perhaps a Carnegie Hero Award.
