Syrian Kurdish official: deal for Syrian army to enter Afrin

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian Kurdish forces and the Damascus government have reached an agreement for the Syrian army to enter the Afrin region to help repel a Turkish offensive, a senior Kurdish official said on Sunday.

Badran Jia Kurd, an adviser to the Kurdish-led administration in northern Syria, told Reuters army troops would deploy along some border positions and could enter the region within the next two days.

The deal underscores the increasingly tangled battlefield in northern Syria, driven by a web of rivalries and alliances among Kurdish forces, the Syrian government, rebel factions, Turkey, the United States and Russia.

BEIRUT (AP) — Pro-Syrian government forces will begin entering the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Afrin in the country’s northwest “within hours,” after reaching an agreement with the Kurdish militia in control of the region, Syrian state media said Monday.

The official news agency SANA said the forces will deploy in Afrin to “bolster” local forces in confronting Turkish “aggression,” suggesting the Syrian government and Kurdish fighters have struck a deal under which the government forces would help repel an ongoing Turkish offensive on the enclave

They always were. We had no business getting involved in regime change there, or anywhere. If Syria and the Kurds can by allies, it seems like a logical way to stabilize the region.

The simple rules of thumb in any Mideast conflict are

1) There are no good guys
2) There is no moral high ground
3) You have about as much risk of being shot in the back by you ally as you do of being shot in the face by your enemy (who may be your ally next month).

There are no good guys in the area

Which is why we never should've gotten involved with regime change there in the first place.

This has been back and forth between Assad and the SDF in Efrin. First solid rumors, then outright statement there was no deal. Terms of the “deal” are the problem.

I’ve sent freepmails to the Syrian Ping list over the weekend and not posted the reports of the negotiation. All the sources I have are saying negotiations are going on, but it is still unclear a firm agreement is done. This is a backroom game with Assad, Iran, and Turkey; with the forces in Efrin.

It is also related to the strike the US made about 10 days ago on invading forces across the deconflict lines (Euphrates) in Deir Ezzor. That is still fuzzy as to who was directing that attack. 250 people died when the US repelled that strike, destroyed the tanks and the pontoon bridge across the Euphrates. (B-52’s, Blackhawk helicopters, missiles, and an AC-130-U)

Russia has been almost totally silent about it. It’s unclear whether they lied to the US when they tried to deconflict the attack. The Russian deconflict contacts said they had no forces in the area. My guess is the Iranians are behind it, probably with Assad’s approval and there was a private deal with the Russian Contractors (not just bridge builders) and the attack elements were not communicating with the Russian Military.

As of 1:00AM CDT there was not deal yet. There was agreement on some things in common, but the terms that Assad (and Iran) required were not at all acceptable. For past 10 days Russia has been very silent. (loss of 100+ largely Russian “contractors”)

Not get involved where bad guys are at? That is not the reason for involvement. atere are good reasons to be involved, but whether there good or bad guys there is not relevant to that.
