Were a month, more or less, into the new year and America has already suffered two school shootings. As usual, the usual voices are calling for increased restrictions on the buying and selling of guns. But guns are not the problem, a contention I can prove. In 1963, at age 15, I packed my bags and went to live with my father in Valdosta, Ga., where I attended Valdosta High School. Hunting being a primary feature of male culture at VHS, I quickly acquired the necessary gear, including a Stevens double-barreled shotgun. During deer- and duck-hunting seasons, I rose well before the start of school and joined several buddies out in the field. After a couple of hours of shooting (or just sitting in a blind and freezing), we put our guns in the trunks of our cars, drove to school, stripped off our hunting duds (under which were clean school clothes) and went to class.
Everyone including the principal, teachers, parents and kids who didnt hunt knew that the student parking lot contained a small arsenal. No one ever mentioned it and, believe me, it never occurred to any of us that our gun could be used to even some score or vent some frustration. Lots of males in my generation, especially those who grew up in small towns or rural America, report a similar high school experience.
No, guns are not the problem. The problem is feelings. I am a member of the last generation of American children whose parents disciplined not only our behavior, but also insisted that we exercise emotional self-control. I am also a member of the first generation of American parents who fell for progressive psychological propaganda to the effect that insisting upon emotional self-control was repressively authoritarian and would prime our

Very good article.
HUH? What about the other 16 mass shootings so far this year? I’m actually surprised to see this in the ABQ journal left wing fish wrapper. (sorry fish) Sadly, NM’s largest city is so friggin’ lib now that what was once a possible place to retire came off the plate. Not to mention the state capital is home to val plame and jojo wilson. Don’t get much more traitorous and liberal than that.
That was the beginning of the end.
Great article. Should be required reading of every politician, teacher and media person in the country.
I’m 76, the the world passed me by sometime “yesterday.” But the key phrase here is “lack of shame.” That seems to be what is totally missing today. Whether it is watching a “comedian” like Jimmy Kimmel ... who’s only funny lines are about sex or some other SHAMEful subject. Remember “Wake up Little Suzie?” ...Shame. These days they don’t go to sleep accidently at the drive in (what’s that?), they sleep in THEIR own bed together all night. Out of wedlock pregnancy? BIG Shame!!! Today ... ah, just get an abortion and go out and do it again. “Lack of shame... yes, that sums it up.
The school parking lot arsenal. Yes, remember it well. There was no such thing as school shootings.
Lack of shame is the Kardashian Syndrome.
... ah, just get an abortion and go out and do it again. Lack of shame.

The numerous abortions indicate not so much a lack of shame but a lack of respect for human life. That is what we witnessed in the FL shooting.
To sum it up more concisely, we are living in a world where a dwindling number of people fear Hell. So many things are wrapped up in that one concept, whether it is murder, infanticide/abortion, “gay marriage”, ethnic violence...you name it.
LIBs/Lefties have a knack for that. They murdered over 100,000,000 humans in the last century. All DEAD.
everything is okay and you can do anything you want to do as long as it feels good...
kill your wife over custody, shoot up your school, be a man one day a woman the next, marry your brother, shoot up dope, smoke weed, eat and drink to your hearts content...
everything has been normalized as long as you "feel good" about it..
1950`s=
Guns in the trunk-
Guns displayed, open breech, in the rear window of cars so the state troopers in town can see that you know what you are doing when you are 16 years old-
Guns in the school basement for the shooting club-
12 & 14 year old kids walking down the street with their Blue Tiks and & 22`s to go hunting rabbits-
Restaurant owners openly displaying their S&W`s holstered on their hips -
All this happened in the 50`s and 60`s-
IT WAS NORMAL and acceptable behavior.
Nobody up here ever gets shot with a gun-
‘It` usually being stabbed by a knife or an axe, coz EVERYONE IS ARMED here.

Shame? Govt *killed* that, IMO, during your lifetime, before mine (45).
They don’t call ‘em “entitlements” for nothing. Theft, by govt, to buy votes...why WOULD Paul 2 s* about Peter?
Look at *any* ghetto. Govt fosters and encourages the same: single-parents (’mom’ held up as a DEITY) while they continue to procreate and live in squalor.
Govt schools? Dumber than a bag of hammers, but never any accountability. Parents? Too busy busting their chops because GOVT steals 50% of everything they have. I can, at least, forgive parents here...there’s only so many hours in the day.
Govt, FRiends. IMO, 99% of the ‘problem(s)’ We face can be directly laid at the feed of: GOVT.
we had parking lots full of pickups with gun racks. No school shootings around here until January 20, 2017.
Problem is government subsidizing single parents and destroying the stable 2 parent home.

The liberals have done their best to re-create Hell here on Earth.
“....IMO, 99% of the problem(s) We face can be directly laid at the feed of: GOVT.”
We may go back ‘n forth over the number but we do agree on the fundamental problem. In boot camp fifty-plus years ago a first and lasting lessons I learned is that 10% screw things up for everyone else. I’ve never claimed to be a world-beater, screwed up my share of life, but the truth of the 10% continually shines through.

I’d be less concerned if the govt *was* the one ‘subsidizing’. But, it’s a two fold issue: violating 5th/13th (if not 9th/10th @ Fed level as well) to buy votes via dependency.
Sorry, my pet peeve re: best verbiage possible.
Terminating the illegal/unconst. Welfare State will cure a HELL of a lot more than just the generational welfare ‘issue’ (restoration of Rights, illegal alien carrot, TRUE charity, smaller govt, personal responsibility, etc.)
